Taylor Swift Accused Of Being ‘Fake’ LGBT Advocate After GLAAD Awards Appearance

Taylor Swift was chosen to honor Ruby Rose at the GLAAD Awards Saturday evening. Billboard has the news.

“Taylor Swift’s squad stretched to include the entire Beverly Hilton ballroom on Saturday night (April 2) when the superstar singer made a surprise visit to the GLAAD Media Awards stage to honor Ruby Rose.”

Billboard added that Swift was greeted with a standing ovation as she took the stage to present Orange Is The New Black‘s Ruby Rose the Stephen F. Kolzak Award. Although the audience was pleased, many on the Internet weren’t. The comments after the article was published on Billboard were pretty angry.

Taylor Swift LGBT Rights

“Gee, when I think of gay rights, I automatically think of Taylor Swift. NOT! Taylor needs to get back in her hole and stop using the LGBT community as marketing props,” claims Yakov Sanberg.

“Sorry but am I the only one who feels like Taylor is so fake?” asks Sojo Yahunai.

The comments after an article on the topic at Entertainment Weekly weren’t much better.

“Hmm. Let’s see. Taylor Swift is losing in popularity. Now she has to show her solidarity with the gays in order to gain it back. What’s next, she’ll pose with a sick girl in a hospital. Oh wait…” says a very cynical @Solid268.

“Taylor Swift is just as bad as Macklemore when it comes to exploiting the gay community for her personal game. Listen, Taylor, we did not forget your white [supremacist] video in Africa last year. It’s not gonna work,” claims @OrangeRadio.

Some on Twitter are going after Taylor Swift, as well.

Taylor Swift most likely had nothing but positive intentions by appearing at the GLAAD Awards. Many would say that it’s a good thing Taylor Swift is using her platform to promote gay rights. However, Taylor Swift has experienced such amazing success in the last year that there are many people who may just want to bring her down.

For example, when Taylor Swift released the video for “Wildest Dreams” last year, it seemed to be harmless. However, it only took a day for the social justice warriors to attack.

Lauren Duca from the Huffington Post accused Swift of colonialism.

“Instead of the cultural appropriation that has become almost status quo in today’s pop music, Swift has opted for the bolder option of actually just embodying the political exploitation of a region and its people. It’s brave, really.”

Then, the pile-on started. Salon, Mic, and other similar sites joined in. The Guardian tried to insist that “Wildest Dreams” marks the beginning of the end for Swift.

“The cracks in Taylor Swift’s seemingly flawless public persona were bound to appear, and it has felt as though the tide has started to turn against the world’s biggest pop star this summer.”

As the Inquisitr reported on January 1, Swift also became a target of a social media backlash when she released her video for “Out of the Woods.” Not only did some people accuse the video of being racist, but others accused Swift of exploiting wild animals.

Swift isn’t scheduled to release new music in the near future and many people consider her break a good thing. Perhaps the reason why there is such a backlash against Swift is because she is overexposed. Fans can only hope Swift’s break from the music world ensures a full-on return that makes her more successful than ever.
