Emily Blunt To Return As Kate Macer For ‘Sicario’ Sequel

Emily Blunt is one of those actresses who seems to excel in whatever film she has been cast in, but last year’s Sicario really put Blunt on the map, proving that the time of the female action star is here. While Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro each delivered knockout performances, it was Blunt’s portrayal of Kate Macer that really had fans and critics talking, even as early as the first teasers. For those eager to see more of Emily in that role and learn what happened to the other Sicario characters, producers of the first film have revealed plans to bring on a sequel.

Emily Blunt To Star In Sicario 2

The producers of Sicario, Molly Smith and twin brothers Trent and Thad Luckinbill, have announced the news that Sicario 2 is already in development, following the critical and financial success of the first film. The team reported that they have been in touch with all principal parties and report that the stars Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro are all on board, though there is no word yet if director Denis Villeneuve will also sign on. Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the first Sicario film, has already turned in a first draft of the Sicario 2 script and the producers say they are very excited about the new story.

“Taylor’s a really great world-builder. He’s got that kind of modern Western voice, which is en vogue right now. And he did it again [with the sequel]. It’s a great big world,” says Sicario producer Trent Luckinbill.

The producer adds that, while he won’t divulge details of the story, he thinks that fans will be happy with the character development in Sicario 2. He suggests that the character played by Benicio del Toro will become a central figure in the second film, even more so than in the first Sicario film.

“We can’t reveal the plot, but you’ll see [Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin] all come back. You have such a great character with Benicio, who was as dark as he was and still so loved. That character resonates so well with audiences. People want to know what happened to him, so it’s a perfect foray for us to explore.”

Sicario Star Emily Blunt Opens Up About Her Second Pregnancy

Emily says things have definitely changed for her between her first pregnancy and the second child she is now expecting. The Sicario actress says she treated herself very delicately throughout that first time, citing experiences with full body massages, yoga, and hypnotherapy CDs, but there’s none of that this time around. Blunt describes her second pregnancy as just more of the same things that normally make up her life, including carrying her 2-year-old around with her. She sometimes even forgets that she is pregnant.

One thing that has made life more complicated is being both a mother and working actress, says Emily. An added distraction came, as Hazel, the daughter Blunt currently parents with husband, John Krasinski, learned to talk.

“It’s quite a juggle with children, especially young children who are now able to vocalize, ‘Please don’t go.’ I don’t want to feel torn,” Ms. Blunt says.

Even though Emily says she hasn’t pampered herself with this second pregnancy, she does admit to feeling a little worried by some of the physical scenes she had to perform in The Girl on the Train. Blunt stars in the film, which is based on the best selling novel by author Paula Hawkins, and she says she only confided in co-star and friend Justin Theroux about her concerns.

“It was actually more physical than I realized, which worried me a little, but I wasn’t telling anyone until a little later on,” says Blunt. “I told a couple of people like [co-star] Justin Theroux pretty early because he and I were doing some of the physical stuff together. He’s my friend, and I think he knew anyway—you know how friends just have a feeling.”

Emily Blunt will next be seen in The Huntsman: Winter’s War, alongside Chris Hemsworth, Jessica Chastain, and Charlize Theron. The film will hit theaters on April 22.
