CNN Plays ‘Only The Good Die Young’ After Wisconsin Shooting Broadcast

24 cable news channel CNN was forced to issue an apology on Monday for following a segment about the Wisconsin shootings by playing the Billy Joel classic “Only The Good Die Young.” This isn’t the first time CNN has gotten in trouble for its lack of sensitivity.

CNN had a similar instance last week where after the start of segment featuring Sarah Palin the song “Stupid Girls” started playing. This seems to happen on the show Starting Point, which allows its guests to pick the songs that will play on the show.

To add insult to injury, when the broadcast about the shooting at the Wisconsin Sikh temple ended and the Billy Joel song started playing the lyrics where the song cut in said the following,

“Well they showed you a statue, told you to pray/They built you a temple and locked you away/Ah but they never told you the price that you pay/For the things that you might have done/Only the good die young”

The shooting at the Temple in Wisconsin occurred last week after six people were killed when a lone gunman opened fire on one of their temples. Obviously this was decidedly worse than the segment with Palin, but one must question CNN’s tact.

CNN issued a statement to the media about the incident:

“We aired a song from our guest’s playlist on the morning show, which aired following a three-minute commercial break and before a segment on presidential politics, unrelated to the Wisconsin shooting. Given the news of the day, this was regrettable and we apologize to our viewers.”

CNN has experienced their lowest viewership in more than 10 years this quarter. The network is struggling to stay relevant against its largest competitor Fox News.
