‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 7, Episode 16: Ian Somerhalder Teases Huge Explosion And Heartbreak

The Vampire Diaries returns to The CW network tomorrow night. Season 7, episode 16 is titled “Days of Future Past,” and fans are wondering what is going to happen with the characters. A small spoiler was revealed by Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon Salvatore in TVD. It turns out that viewers should expect a huge explosion and heartbreak. Could someone die when The Vampire Diaries returns?

Somerhalder directed “Days of Future Past,” and one scene will be emotional for TVD fans. At one point in The Vampire Diaries season 7, episode 16, there will be a huge car explosion. Ian didn’t reveal who, if anyone, dies in the blast. However, Somerhalder did tease that it might be upsetting for some viewers.

“This car blew up and I was 200 feet away and I could still feel the heat and the percussion from this thing,” Ian Somerhalder told Entertainment Weekly regarding the upcoming scene. “The audience isn’t going to get the blast that I felt. What they’re going to feel is real heartbreak for why that explosion happened.”

Based on what The Vampire Diaries actor said, it seems that the emotions may not necessarily come from who is involved in the explosion, but why the car blew up. Could someone losing their life be the only way to deal with Rayna (Leslie-Anne Huff) once and for all? Or will the blast be another one of Damon’s not-so-great ideas? As the promo and press release teases, Damon is desperate to fix things with Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley).

“In an attempt to make things right with his brother, Damon offers to have Stefan’s scar magically transferred to him, only to discover that doing so may come with some unexpected consequences,” The Futon Critic wrote about what to expect in the next episode of TVD. “With time running out and Rayna closing in on Stefan, Valerie (Elizabeth Blackmore) desperately attempts to reason with Damon before it’s too late. Elsewhere, after being framed for breaking Rayna out of The Armory, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) attempts to clear his name, but not before a violent run-in with Nora (guest star Scarlett Byrne) forces him to make an upsetting discovery.”

The extended promo clip from Spoilers Guide hints that “Days of Future Past” will have Rayna still chasing after Stefan. In the season 7, episode 16 promo clip, the obsessive vampire huntress catches up with Stefan and forces the Salvatore brother to make a decision about Damon. After fans watched the extended promo, some wondered if Stefan really was letting go of his brother once and for all. However, the synopsis for the April 8 episode teases that Stefan is still on the run from Rayna, so fans shouldn’t worry about Stefan and Damon Salvatore’s fate just yet.

“In the aftermath of his brother’s fateful decision, Stefan awakens to find himself thrown into a life or death situation with only his basic instincts to rely on. With time working against him, he sets off on a journey of survival while forced to confront a lifetime of irreversible damage Damon has done to their relationship,” Vampire Diaries Online wrote about season 7, episode 17. “Meanwhile, desperate to save his brother, Damon Salvatore follows an unusual lead he has come across, while Matt (Zach Roerig) sends Valerie to Dallas to enlist Alaric’s (Matt Davis) help in the search for Stefan. Finally, when Rayna discovers the emergence of a new threat, she sets off on her own mission to find Stefan before the others do.”

This is a bit confusing, but it leads to speculation that Stefan Salvatore will either not really be caught by Rayna or somehow he escapes. Some viewers even have a theory that Stefan and Rayna’s scene in the promo clip doesn’t actually happen. As previously reported by The Inquisitr, Stefan Salvatore being caught by Rayna could be an illusion if he is stuck in the Phoenix Stone.

The CW renewed The Vampire Diaries, so don’t count on losing Stefan or Damon Salvatore. Despite the rumors that Ian Somerhalder is leaving TVD, he reportedly signed a new contract for season 8. Interestingly enough, Deadline reported the contract update on March 11, weeks before the rumors of Somerhalder leaving The Vampire Diaries went viral.

Do you think someone is going to die during the car explosion when The Vampire Diaries returns on April 1? Could TVD fans be losing a favorite character in “Days of Future Past”? Why will the scene be heartbreaking for viewers? Find out Friday night when a new episode airs on The CW network.
