India looked in trouble after Australia batted first and hit a big target of 160, but Virat Kohli turned in a masterful batting performance and MS Dhoni had a series of big hits as well as they chased it down, including some big final overs.

As ESPNcricinfo pointed out, India’s target was large as they crept closer and closer to the 20th over, but Kohli and Dhoni went on a hitting spree and ended up winning with five balls remaining.

“Set 161 for victory, India saw their required run-rate balloon up past 10 an over, up towards 12 an over, but Kohli was always poised to prick the balloon. He did so with such perfect timing – 19 runs coming off the 18th over from James Faulkner and then 16 off the next from Nathan Coulter-Nile – that you felt he never doubted himself. In the end, India got home with five balls to spare, madness when you consider they needed 47 off 24.”

“The win came with a boundary clubbed through long-on by Dhoni from the first ball of the 20th over. Faulkner by then was in the unenviable position of having to keep India to three or less in the final over, such was the devastation that had just occurred. Dhoni had played an important role with 18 not out off 10, but it was Kohli who fell to his knees to celebrate. This was on him. Him and his unbeaten 82 from 51 deliveries.”

According to ESPN, Australia had a nearly 99 percent chance of winning as the match moved to the late overs, but Kohli’s finish changed that drastically.

For Australia, there was little to do against the lethal combination of Dhoni and Kohli as they turned in a series of big hits. Australian bowler Steve Smith said Kohli was simply unstoppable.

“You can see an innings like that and one guy taking the game away from a team, which I don’t think you have the luxury of doing in the longer formats of the game,” Smith said (via The Guardian). “It was a pretty serious innings from Virat Kohli to take that game away from us tonight.”

Kohli himself noted the importance of his performance. India had come into the tournament as favorites to win it all, but that was in serious doubt after India suffered a huge loss to New Zealand in the opening match. That put them against the ropes for the rest of the tournament, and India needed a fantastic finish against Bangladesh — with three straight wickets to finish the game — just to have a chance to advance.

Now, after beating Australia to set up a semifinal matchup against West Indies, Kohli tried to put his performance in perspective.

“That performance certainly has to be in my top three but probably it is top right now because I’m a bit emotional,” said Kohli (via Stuff).

“A lot was riding on us playing at home and with the crowd you want to give them as much entertainment as possible.”
