37-year-old Tomma Graves went missing in 2010. A missing persons report was filed and a search ensued to find the single mother after she failed to answer any phone calls or show up to Applebees to eat as expected, according to Lexington Herald Leader. Her family and friends knew right away that something had to be wrong.

Sadly, the body of Tomma Graves was eventually found in her truck, which was parked near Harrod Brothers Funeral Home located at 312 Washington Street in Frankfort, Kentucky. The woman was sitting in the front seat of her truck and had multiple gunshot wounds to the body, including a bullet wound to the back of the head.

At first, it appeared that her murder was connected to her job as an advocate against domestic violence, since she often worked with victims who were in violent situations. Everyone had a hard time trying to figure out who would want to see her dead because she was considered a respectable and upstanding citizen in the community. The local Crime Stoppers offered a substantial reward for anyone with information to come forward.

Her wake was especially sad, and rumors spread like wildfire as to what happened to the former victims advocate. One rumor was that she had become involved with Alastair Couch—a guy, who many say, was a thug— someone far different from what Tomma Graves stood for and what she had accomplished in life. People who knew Alastair say that he was always a magnate for the ladies because of his good looks. According to WDRB-News, Attorney Rick Sparks of Franklin County made the following comment.

“I have no idea what this has to do with, I know this, Tomma Graves is respected in this community, respected by law enforcement and members of the bar and the court. We all knew the job she did, we all knew how valuable she was, we never heard anybody say a bad thing about her. One way or another, it’s unbelievable.”

In the end, all tips led police to Alastair Couch, Tomma Graves’ on again-off again boyfriend. At first, he denied being with her or having any contact with her, but later told police that they had been ambushed by a masked man who shot Tomma Graves. Afraid that he would be implicated in her murder, he got rid of the murder weapon and pretended to know nothing about what happened, Justia court records show.

“Couch drove the truck to downtown Frankfort and parked it. He was scared and apprehensive about calling the police, in part because he is an admitted drug dealer. Instead, he gathered Ms. Graves’ cell phone, his own firearm, and the alleged assailant’s revolver, which had been left in the truck. He then called Whitis and disposed of the unknown assailant’s revolver in a remote area outside of Frankfort.”

A background check of Alastair Couch showed that he was a drug dealer and was part of the Memphis Crew, a group of criminals who were responsible for much of the burglaries, thefts, and drugs that ran rampant in Frankfort. Couch was arrested, charged, and later convicted of murder in the case of Tomma Graves.

Graves left behind a mother, her two kids, and other family and friends who absolutely adored her.
