Ian Somerhalder Reveals His Hopes For Season Eight of ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ Could Be Their Last

Ian Somerhalder is one star that fans can’t imagine The Vampire Diaries without. Now, Ian is speaking out and sharing about season 8 of the show, and how he feels like it should go down.

There have been a lot of rumors that this will be the final season of The Vampire Diaries, but so far, Ian Somerhalder is not confirming that news. E! Online shared what Ian had to say about season 8 and what he his hoping that fans will get to see.

Ian Somerhalder did share that he took a very small amount of time to reflect on what has happened over the past seven years, but he didn’t spend too long thinking about it. Here is what Ian shared.

“I looked at myself in the mirror and I said god, man, 154 episodes, seven years of your life you’ve navigated through this, wow. It was just a quick moment of reflection.”

Somerhalder went on to talk about how he really wants season 8 of the show to go back to the basics. Ian knows that there are a few core characters that the fans love. Some of these characters that the show started with such as Damon and Stefen are still around. Nina Dobrev has left the show, along with her characters Elena and Katherine. Ian Somerhalder wants to see them go back to the basics and focusing on these core characters that made the fans fall in love with the show in the first place.

When it comes to the speculation that this is the final season of The Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder revealed that they do not know yet if this will be the last season. Ian did share his thoughts though.

“We don’t know where that’s going to go but leaving the audience with the fact that by that time they will have spent eight years of their life with these people, I want the audience to feel closer, more afraid, more in love, more in tune with these characters than they ever have been.”

TV Guide shared that Ian Somerhalder revealed that a few characters will be lost when the show returns. This kind of explains what Ian means when he said that they will be going back to focusing on those core characters. Ian did say he didn’t know for sure if this would be the end of their show or not. Ian explained that it is harder now and they need to get back some of the glory of the earlier seasons.

“It’s almost like we’ve been chasing a high for the last five, six years. Do you remember when Elena ran to the Salvator house and asked Stefan, ‘What are you? What the f— are you?’ And he says, ‘A vampire.’ Do you remember how big that moment was? It was huge. And now, we have to kill six or eight people, blow up three cars and a house to get that same emotion. Do you know what I mean?”

Ian Somerhalder did tease that when the show comes back April 1, they will lose a few characters. Of course, it does sound like Ian is safe and of course Paul Wesley’s character Stefan should be as well. With what Ian is saying, expect it to be someone that hasn’t been around from the start.

Do you think that it is time for The Vampire Diaries to come to an end? Can you imagine the show going on if Ian Somerhalder was to leave the same way Nina Dobrev did? Sound off in the comments below and don’t miss new episodes of The Vampire Diaries when they return on April 1.
