In a high-profile international friendly, Germany hosts England Saturday just three months ahead of the 2016 UEFA European Championship. The match will stream live after officials in both countries contemplated canceling the match in light of the terrorist attacks in Brussels, Belgium on Tuesday — but decided to go ahead with the game after all.
“We have no evidence indicating there is a hazard to the games in the coming days,” said Hendrik Große-Lefert, security chief for the German Football Association. “Of course, the latest findings are flowing from Brussels to the security agencies on the ground ahead of the internationals in Berlin and Munich.”
The 22-player England squad touched down in Berlin Friday and immediately began preparations for the friendly match on Saturday night.
The terrorist incident hit home for the German team, who were in the middle of playing a friendly match against France in Paris when terrorists attacked several locations in that city in November of last year — including a suicide bomber who set off an explosion just outside of the Stade de France where the game was underway.
“The events that happened yesterday are terrible and have made us thoughtful,” remarked German manager Joachim Löw on Wednesday, the day after the attacks in Belgium.
But the Germany vs. England friendly will go ahead, as England faces a major test against the reigning World Cup champions, a test that will give manager Roy Hodgson a clearer picture of what his team needs heading into the Euros in June.
England played two friendly international matches in November of 2015, losing in Spain by a 2-0 score, then defeating France at home by the same tally.

Though Germany won their fourth World Cup in 2014, to go with a trio of European championships, the well-oiled footballing machine has shown a a few signs of wear and tear recently, dropping two of their last three international games, including a shocker to the Republic of Ireland.
But Germany has defeated England in both of their most recent meetings, including a 1-0 win in a 2013 friendly, and a 4-1 win in the knockout stage of the 2010 World Cup.
England has not played against Germany in Germany since 2008, however, in that match, England took the victory 2-1 in a friendly match.
Both teams will be playing without their captains, Wayne Rooney for England and Rooney’s Manchester United teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger, who are sitting out the game with injuries.
