Hailee Steinfeld Hits ‘Rock Bottom’ With DNCE And Joe Jonas’ Help

Hailee Steinfeld decided to revamp her latest single “Rock Bottom,” but this time, she got a little help from some talented friends. Steinfeld reached out to Joe Jonas and his bandmates DNCE to help bring her song to the next level.

The 19-year-old singer and actress released the music video for “Rock Bottom” on March 25, as reported on a People exclusive. The single is from Steinfeld’s last EP, Haiz, which Steinfeld released back in November 2015. The new radio-edit version features DNCE, with Jonas helping with vocals.

The music video features Steinfeld as part of a couple that gets along in a few scenes, then argues in others, which is the basis of a relationship that loops into a love-fight cycle. Jonas and DNCE appear about halfway into the video, and Jonas sings the second verse of “Rock Bottom” before he and Hailee Steinfeld sing the rest of the song together.

Steinfeld told People in an interview that the lyrics in “Rock Bottom” captured the feelings she felt in previous romantic relationships.

“I’ve experienced that relationship in its entirety. I do feel like there are some songs that really represent a relationship for a relationship, and then when you hear it, you think about that specific relationship, and I have that when I hear ‘Rock Bottom.'”

In the original version, Steinfeld sings the song by herself. The actress-turned-pop singer decided to work with Joe Jonas and his band DNCE after listening to Jonas sing a verse of “Rock Bottom.”

It wasn’t hard for Steinfeld to collaborate with DNCE. She and Jonas have both worked with the same group of songwriters and music producers for their respective EPs. DNCE is a pop band that has Jonas as the frontman, and Jack Lawless, JinJoo Lee, and Cole Whittle playing instruments.

It was easy for Hailee Steinfeld to interact with the actor that plays her boyfriend in the music video. John Economou, the former homeless guy-turned-model, plays the on-and-off again love interest in “Rock Bottom.”

Steinfeld went through a selection of guys before she met Economou, and found him fun to talk to, not to mention that he is easy on the eyes. Steinfeld mentioned to People that her favorite scene in the music video includes the slow-motion kiss that happens in the rain.

Economou and Steinfeld do have mutual buddies. Steinfeld is part of Taylor Swift’s “Girl Squad,” which includes Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. Jenner and Hadid discovered Economou on a beach while they were on a modeling shoot with actor Ansel Elgort. Soon, the 20-year-old skateboarder went from homeless to an in-demand model.

Despite the mutual connections, Hailee Steinfeld and John Economou didn’t meet until Steinfeld’s former agent arranged a meeting. Steinfeld’s former agent, who is still friends with the crossover star, now works with Economou.

While “Rock Bottom” is set to become the next hit for Steinfeld, she is currently working on her debut LP, which is due to be released later this year. Steinfeld hopes that her fans will like her first full album, and says that she is having fun recording songs that reflect her musical tastes.

Meanwhile, with Steinfeld’s acting career, she will reprise her role as Emily Junk in Pitch Perfect 3, the third and final film in the trilogy that has an August 2017 release date. It was Steinfeld’s role as Emily that helped her get a record deal with Republic Records.

Hailee Steinfeld has an upcoming film, Besties, a coming-of-age comedy/drama that is due later this year, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Woody Harrelson, Kyra Sedgwick, Blake Jenner, and Haley Lu Richardson round out the main cast. Besties does not have an official release date as of March 2016.
