Simon Cowell Confirms He Doesn’t Know If One Direction Will Ever Reunite

Simon Cowell is revealing that One Direction’s highly publicized hiatus could, in fact, be a more permanent split.

Cowell made the surprising One Direction split admission in a new interview with Billboard, where Simon confirmed that he actually doesn’t know if the boyband will ever get back together.

“I don’t know if it’s a hiatus or a breakup, to be honest,” Cowell told Billboard this week of One Direction’s future as a band.

Simon also admitted that he doesn’t even want to know what’s in the future for Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, and Niall Horan right now.

“In a weird way, I don’t want to know,” Simon surprisingly admitted the magazine, adding that he doesn’t think the One Direction boys have “had enough time to experience what it’s like not being in the group to really answer that.”

Although Simon stayed coy on whether or not he’d like to see One Direction reunite in the future, Cowell got candid about the boys’ decision to part ways, temporarily or permanently, and admitted that he was fully on board when the boyband put forward the idea of a hiatus.

“Whenever I was with them, we talked about [going on a break], and I couldn’t argue with them,” Cowell told Billboard of the One Direction boys’ decision to take a break last year.

He confessed that it will all be down to Louis, Liam, Harry, and Niall to decide when and if the band gets back together.

“They had achieved so much in a short period of time, and I didn’t want them to get jaded. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to trust people more, particularly artists,” Simon admitted in the candid new interview. “They’ll decide when they want to come back together.”

Simon Cowell’s bombshell that One Direction’s hiatus may become more of a permanent break comes just weeks after Us Weekly alleged that the band already called it quits and have no plans to reunite in the near future.

According to a source who spoke out about the foursome in January, One Direction decided “not to renew their recording contract” last year while admitting that the guys think that “the One Direction thing just ran its course.”

“They’ll remain friends, but they are exhausted and want solo careers,” Us Weekly’s inside source added.

As for what the One Direction guys will get up to with their new found free time, the magazine’s insider revealed that the guys already have some ideas for what they could get up to.

“Liam is really interested in songwriting and production,” a source revealed, adding that Harry “is launching a career in acting and singing.”

One Direction announced their plans for a hiatus back in November, where they clarified to Entertainment Tonight that the break was, in fact, not a permanent split.

“We’re not breaking up. We’re literally taking time out to see our friends and see our family and reflect on what we’ve done over the last few years,” Niall Horan told the site of One Direction’s time away from the spotlight at the time.

However, One Direction have not spoken out about their future following Simon Cowell’s bombshell new interview.

“I think it’s important for us to take the break and have it as a break,” Harry continued. “We’ve been, of course, incredibly fortunate to travel a lot of the world, and I think one of the cool things about that is we haven’t necessarily spent a lot of time in each place.”
