WWE News: Chris Jericho Teasing Feud With Shinsuke Nakamura?

Former six-time WWE champion Chris Jericho has made some derogatory remarks about former New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) star Shinsuke Nakamura on Twitter in recent days. Nakamura is set to make his WWE NXT debut in a few weeks at NXT Takeover: Dallas during Wrestlemania 32 weekend.

While Jericho is known to tease and mess with people on social media, his written attacks toward the NJPW legend have persisted. The first comments happened this past Tuesday after a fan said that Jericho “is nothing compared to Nakamura” and told him to go back touring with his failed band (Fozzy).

The following day, Nakamura responded to Jericho, tweeting out a link to a Super Liger mask. It was a reference to Jericho’s lone appearance as Super Liger at NJPW’s Wrestling World in January of 1997. Jericho, who was under contract with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) at the time, appeared for NJPW as part of an agreement between the two companies.

As UPROXX profiled, NJPW thought it would be a good idea for Jushin “Thunder” Liger to have a “mirror image rival.” The idea was similar to that of the Black Tiger character being created to fight against Tiger Mask. Jericho was chosen to portray that role, and it ended poorly as the mask obstructed his sight and caused him to botch several moves. The character was retired after that one appearance.

Nakamura will become a member of the WWE Universe in a matter of weeks, but in the meantime, Jericho issued a warning to him.

The former three-time IWGP Heavyweight champion Nakamura replied to Jericho’s tweet with a simple “thanks.” Jericho was not done, however, as one fan tweeted to the “Ayatollah of Rock N’ Rolla” that Nakamura would “wreck him.”

It turns out, there was a reason to the tweets, as WWE wants to have Jericho wrestle Nakamura during the company’s return to Japan in July, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (via Wrestlezone). While the company is not sure if any of their Japan shows will be broadcast live on the WWE Network, a match between these two men is on the radar.

Nakamura will wrestle Sami Zayn at NXT Takeover: Dallas and reports have suggested he will remain in NXT for the first few months of his WWE tenure.

However, Jericho has wrestled some dream matches in the last year with some of NXT’s current and past superstars. During last year’s tour of Japan, Jericho wrestled Finn Balor during a live event and then wrestled Neville during the Beast in the East special on WWE Network. Continuing to wrestle on strictly live events, Jericho also wrestled Kevin Owens for the Intercontinental title on multiple occasions.

Recently, Jericho has wrestled fellow NJPW legend, AJ Styles. Since Styles’ debut at the Royal Rumble, Jericho has been his most prominent adversary. The two men have wrestled each other three times and are expected to wrestle each other at Wrestlemania 32.

A feud with Nakamura would likely incorporate similar elements to Jericho’s encounters with Styles. More importantly, a match between the two would be what many on Twitter are calling a “dream match.”
