NFL Draft Rumors: Quarterback Jared Goff Called A Bust By One Scout

NFL draft rumors have been pretty positive about quarterback Jared Goff. As the 2016 NFL Draft draws closer, though, one NFC scout is already predicting that Goff is going to be a bust. A report by CBS Sports failed to identify the anonymous scout but did reveal a number of quotes from him. Included in the review of Jared Goff is a comparison to current Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler.

“I hope somebody takes him early, ahead of us. That would be great, drop a good player to us. I’m just not crazy about him, not at all. He doesn’t win. Show me a quarterback who didn’t win in college, that did well up here? There aren’t many. To me he’s another Jay Cutler. And you can take that any way you want.”

That these NFL draft rumors compare Jared Goff to a 10-year veteran at the quarterback position isn’t exactly putting him in a bad light. Although Jay Cutler has not found a lot of postseason success during his time with the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears, he is still considered to be a top 15 quarterback in the NFL. Still, it does point out that Goff may not be an elite talent, which is what the teams selecting at the top of the 2016 NFL Draft will want from those picks.

In the most recent 2016 NFL mock draft from CBS Sports, California quarterback Jared Goff falls to No. 7 on the draft board of many analysts. The San Francisco 49ers hold that seventh selection, and it has long been rumored that the team will select a quarterback with that first-round pick. There had been prior NFL draft rumors linking the 49ers to North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz as well as to names like Memphis QB Paxton Lynch in the second round. If Goff is still on the board at No. 7, though, it would be a difficult decision for the 49ers to pass on him.

In a new mock draft constructed by NFL.com, Jared Goff also falls to the San Francisco 49ers. Another prediction states that the Cleveland Browns will go with Carson Wentz as the second overall selection, allowing the 49ers to target a quarterback who already has a strong following in California. NFL analyst Lance Zierlein weighed in on how he perceives the 49ers targeting Goff.

“Is Goff a perfect fit for Chip Kelly’s offense? To be honest, I don’t even know what a perfect fit even looks like for Kelly anymore. I just know that Goff has talent and Chip needs a quarterback.”

For the last year, there have been NFL draft rumors about Jared Goff and how he could become the top overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft. He finished his senior season with California by posting a 64.5 percent completion rate, 43 touchdown passes, and 13 interceptions. After beating Air Force in a bowl game, California finished the season with an overall record of 8-5. In his prior season, Goff led California to a 5-7 overall record, presumably where the NFC scout decided that the young quarterback couldn’t lead a team to success.

When the 2016 NFL Draft begins on Thursday, April 28, it is expected that Jared Goff will be one of the first two quarterbacks selected. Whether he goes to the Cleveland Browns as the No. 2 pick or slides to the San Francisco 49ers at No. 7, Goff will come into the NFL with a lot of pressure to perform immediately. Until that date arrives, there are going to be a lot of additional NFL draft rumors, including some analysts stating how they believe Goff won’t work out. But is getting compared to Jay Cutler such a bad thing for an aspiring NFL star?
