Days of Our Lives teases that significant casting changes are in full swing on the set of the NBC soap opera. It looks like, according to Daytime Confidential, that Brandon Beemer (Shawn), Martha Madison (Belle), Marie Wilson (Summer) and Sal Stowers (Lani) are all out of the daytime drama. The news has come as a shock to many fans and it prompted a moment of panic on the likelihood that the soap opera could be canceled in the coming months.
The daytime drama has barely escaped cancellation last year when they pulled impressive numbers for the anniversary episodes. Ever since, they have been barely meeting the minimum ratings required to stay on the air. They have lost much of their cast — whether it be they were killed off, fired or decided to leave — it seems like they have an uphill battle to stay on air beyond 2017.
Celeb Dirty Laundry reported that Shawn, Belle, Summer, and Lani will be written off the show; apparently, the change is permanent. A fan of the show reached out to Martha Madison, the actress who portrays Belle, and she confirmed the exit saying that it was not a temporary change. In a fan exchange, Madison revealed that there is no stability working with the series.
When the NBC soap opera fans heard of a writer shake up a few months ago, many predicted that casting change could be coming. It seems likely that in order to buy another year on the air, Days Of Our Lives had to tighten the budget which required letting a few valued characters go.
Josh Griffith left the role of the co-head scribe and was replaced by Ryan Quam. Many fans felt like it should have been Dena Higley who left the writing team, instead of Josh. He was praised by the actors for his ability to write the characters (mostly) true to form. In fact, a report came out a few months before he was let go that revealed he would talk with each of the actors to get a sense of what direction they saw the character going moving ahead.
The spoilers indicated that Summer’s character was not a long-term character and would only be around for a short time. Her dismissal is not too shocking; however; Shawn, Belle, and Lani were main characters and their departure seems sudden. It was only a year ago that Days brought back Belle and Shawn Brady back to Salem as part of the 50th anniversary. It was a massive success reuniting the Brady family together. With Belle’s exit, that will leave Dr. Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) with no children living in Salem.
Let’s hope that another soap opera (or prime-time) snatches up Brandon Beemer, Martha Madison, Marie Wilson and Sal Stowers in the coming months. At the present time, NBC has not revealed any spoilers about how the actors will exit the show or their exit dates. Are you surprised by their departure from Days Of Our Lives? Do you think Brandon Beemer will return to his role on The Bold and the Beautiful? How much longer do you think the NBC soap opera can go on with low ratings and a revolving door with the casting changes?
