Chris Martin of Coldplay has kept himself busy this winter by performing with his band in this year’s Super Bowl, and did a recent performance for the Today Show. Recently, Martin opened up in a new interview about how he suffered from depression after his split from actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

The Coldplay frontman sat down with Josh Eells of The Sunday Times to talk about his life after he and Paltrow made their famous “conscious uncoupling” divorce announcement, as reported in The Telegraph. While the former couple tried to maintain a civil relationship with the media watching, Martin revealed in his interview that he fell into a depressive state that lasted a year.

Chris Martin states that his divorce to Paltrow is a “weird one,” since the 39-year-old still goes on family vacations with his ex, and that the two of them still remain good friends to this day.

“It’s always out there in the media, but I have a very wonderful separation-divorce. It’s a divorce but it’s a weird one…I’ve lived a lot of life since then.”

Martin and Paltrow were married for 10 years, and have two children: daughter Apple, 11, and son Moses, 9. It was on Paltrow’s lifestyle website, Goop, that the couple used the now popular pop culture term “conscious uncoupling” in a press release to announce to the world that their married ended.

Martin also revealed that he is no longer following a strict vegetarian diet following his split from Gwyneth Paltrow, and now follows a diet that is similar to the fictional boxer Rocky Balboa. Martin has also turned to literature and non-fiction work to help him cope with his depression. Martin read Auschwitz survivor Viktor Frankl’s heartbreaking experiences in a death camp that was published in 1946.

Chris Martin also found inspiration from “The Guest House,” a poem written by Persian poet Rumi.

“That one Rumi poem changes everything. It says that even when you’re unhappy, it’s good for you.”

Fellow Coldplay members were worried about Martin. Paul Harvey stated that the rest of the band members, along with other family members, were checking on Martin on a constant basis, to make sure that the singer was okay.

In 2015, it was revealed that while Paltrow filed and sent divorce papers to Martin, the singer has yet to sign them and make the divorce official. Meanwhile, both Martin and Paltrow have moved on to other romantic relationships since their split.

Paltrow has been in a relationship with Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk since August, 2014. Martin dated actress Jennifer Lawrence after his split from Paltrow, but they called it quits in June, 2015. Martin has been linked to Peaky Blinders actress Annabelle Wallis since August, 2015.

In January, Coldplay was one of Super Bowl 50’s half-time performers, where the band shared the stage with Bruno Mars and Beyonce to entertain the football crowd. Last week, Coldplay did another outdoor performance for the Today Show, where Martin sang songs such as “Adventure of a Lifetime” and “A Sky Full of Stars.”

Martin has a much cheerier outlook on life as of today. He still maintains a good friendship with Paltrow, along with co-parenting with her for their two children. Martin says that he feels a lot calmer now, and is more grateful for life since his marriage to Paltrow ended. He now feels that he has the tools to turn it around, and see where life will take him.

“I still wake up down a lot of days. But now I feel like I’ve been given the tools to turn it around.”
