Blake Lively? Plays Injured Surfer Terrorized By Shark In ‘?The Shallows’ [TRAILER]

Blake Lively stars in what’s being referred to as “Jaws for a new generation” – The Shallows, in which she plays a surfer stranded alone on a rock with a great white shark terrorizing the waters between her and 200 yards from the shore. Oscar Jaenada and Sedona Legge co-star in the film, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and penned by Anthony Jaswinski. Check out the trailer above.

As Entertainment Weekly notes, the trailer features Lively’s character, Mia, trapped on a rock and screaming for help while clinging to an injured leg as a shark circles around her. How did she get on that rock in the first place, and what role will Oscar and Sedona play in helping her reach the shore? Most importantly, why does Blake decide to go surfing in an isolated area? Presumably, we’ll find out this and more when The Shallows hits theaters June 24.

Jaswinski’s script landed him on the Black List in 2014, and Jaume’s previous films include Orphan and Non-Stop. The Shallows has a similar vibe to 2003’s Open Water, about two scuba divers stranded in shark-infested waters after being abandoned by their boat.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Shallows from Sony:

“In the taut thriller The Shallows, Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing alone on a secluded beach when she is attacked by a great white shark and stranded just a short distance from shore. Though she is only 200 yards from her survival, getting there proves the ultimate contest of wills. It’s Jaws for a new generation.”

Blake has been prepared for this role since 2011, when she told Jay Leno how she faced her fear of sharks by going cage diving with a school of great whites during a trip to South Africa.

“On the plane, I was hearing these flight attendants talk about shark diving,” she recalled to the then-host of the Tonight Show. “They said, ‘You can go cage diving with great white sharks,’ and I’m terrified of sharks,” Lively said. “So I said, ‘That sounds like a horrible idea – let’s do it!'”

“They throw blood into the water, and they throw fish guts,” she explained at the time. “So you’re standing on a boat and you’re trying to lure in sharks, and then you see great white sharks circling your boat – and that’s a good thing. Everything you never want to happen is happening.”

Lively is best known for her role as Serena van der Woodsen in the CW drama Gossip Girl, and has co-starred in such films as The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Accepted, The Town, Green Lantern, Savages and The Age of Adaline. Blake wed actor Ryan Reynolds in September 2012, and they welcomed their daughter, James, on December 16, 2014. Last year, she told Allure magazine the reasons behind keeping her daughter’s name a secret for the first couple of months.

“It’s her life. She should have her privacy until she chooses not to have her privacy, just as I got to choose and my husband got to choose.”

She also explained why she didn’t take a tip from close friend Beyonce’s PR handbook, and announce her pregnancy on live television, as Bey did with Blu Ivy during the 2011 VMAs.

“That was my way of owning that moment. I can’t be someone like Beyoncé,” she joked. “It was a struggle, because we want to keep our privacy, but we also don’t want our lives to be exploited by other people. So we did it simply; it was a quiet way, an elegant way.”

Blake Lively appeared in Beyonce and Jay Z’s star-studded “Run” music video in 2014, which also features Sean Penn and Jake Gyllenhaal. Last fall, she wrapped filming on the upcoming Woody Allen romantic comedy Café Society, co-starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell and Parker Posey.
