Jennifer Lopez Domestic Violence ‘Hell’ Reveal On American Idol

Jennifer Lopez’ American Idol judging duty on March 15 held a surprising revelation for the audience and Idol hopefuls. Lopez can always be counted on to be passionate and expressive. When one of the American Idol competitors on the show aired some deeply personal stuff, it also led superstar Lopez to reveal some things she probably never intended to share.

TMZ reports a Fishwrapper story about Lopez’ reaction during the episode, and the startling thing that happened after Idol favorite La’Porsha Renae sang a very personal song. Renae sang Mary J. Blige’s song about domestic abuse, “No More Drama,” and Renae’s performance reduced Lopez to tears.

When the performance was over, Jennifer shared what was in her heart, and shocked fans with an admission she made about her own past. The Daily Mail reported that Jennifer stood up with tears pouring down her face to speak directly to Renae.

“We’ve all been through stuff like that.”

You just never know who has a story of domestic violence to tell. Lopez went on to offer words of support and solidarity to Renae.

“It takes a lot to overcome, it takes a lot of strength to overcome those things in our life, baby. I know, everybody knows, we’ve all been through stuff like that, you know what I mean?”

Before La’Porsha sang, the video montage about her gave the audience and Lopez some insight as to what they could expect from the performance of the song chosen for her by Idol. La’Porsha, who is a single mother and an American Idol front-runner, “opened up” about her experience of domestic abuse, and that struck a chord with Lopez. Renae was in an abusive relationship until shortly before Idol opened, and once she was on the fast-paced schedule demanded by competitors on the show, she had no chance to heal.

The choice of music forced the singer, and judge Lopez, to confront her experience and to begin working through her feelings about it. She spoke to People magazine about the relationship and her decision to go ahead with “No More Drama” despite the difficulties it presented for her.

“It was something that needed to happen. I got out of that bad relationship in April and came straight into American Idol so I didn’t have time to heal. Having America pick this song for me forced me to face the feelings I had been running from. That’s why I got so emotional.”

La’Porsha was nearly overcome by emotion as she sang the meaningful lyrics in front of Jennifer, and both Lopez and Renae ended in tears. But that emotion gave a star quality to her performance, and connected her directly with Lopez herself over the two women’s shared experience of domestic violence.

It’s not the first time in this very emotional season of Idol that tears fell during a show. People reports that the season premiere saw “inaugural Idol” Kelly Clarkson bring the whole American Idol audience to tears when she gave herself away as well.

Lopez cried again during the show when it came time to address the reality that American Idol is coming to an end. The Daily Mail reported that Jennifer responded to a really great performance by another Idol front-runner, Trent Harmon, as he sang Lynyrd Skynyrd’s rock classic, “Simple Man.”

“It’s moments like this why I love Idol, and why I’m going to miss it so much. It’s even having this front seat watching the perfect song and the perfect singer sing it at that time. And it made me think, ‘D***, I’ve been so lucky the five years I got to be on this show and watch things like that.'”
