Marcia Clark Opens Up About Rumored Chris Darden Relationship

Recently, Marcia Clark opened up about the rumors that she had a relationship with litigator Chris Darden, who she worked alongside in the infamous O.J. Simpson trial. Clark was the famed prosecutor who endured media and public scrutiny, from her appearance to how she questioned witnesses, when the trial was going on.

Marcia Clark was been thrust back into the spotlight after 20 years due to the successful FX series The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. In the series, actress Sarah Paulson portrays her. Clark has done several public appearances to tell her side of things, since the writers of The People v O.J. Simpson are taking some liberties. That said, Clark has went on record to say that the writers involved got “the big things” right.

Clark recently stopped by the Ellen DeGeneres Show to have a chat about what she’s been up to since the trial of the century, which meant she had to rehash about life during the trial, which wasn’t pleasant. During the trial, Clark was going through a tumultuous divorce, which the series covers in the episode titled “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia.” While she doesn’t mention the divorce, she did coyly delve into the alleged relationship she had with co-counsel Chris Darden.

When DeGeneres said that it seemed like Darden had fallen in love with Clark, the attorney said, “It didn’t seem that way to me. We were really partners, we were trench mates. He wasn’t my second chair. A lot of times when you prosecute you have a Senior prosecutor and a junior prosecutor. It wasn’t like that. We were co-counsel and he was my partner and it was really. I can’t tell you how important it was to have him there.”

This isn’t the first time she addressed the portrayal of her partnership with Chris Darden. Clark recently spoke to Vulture, and when the reporter asked if she really shared a dance with Darden in her office, Clark said she hadn’t.

“No, but again, that’s a great moment because they’re delivering the essence of our relationship, and that’s nice. It’s an essential truth even if it’s not a literal truth.”

As for whether or not she was looking forward to seeing the case come to life on screen, Marcia was terrified by the prospect of reliving it all over again, especially since Simpson was acquitted of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, which she highly disputed.

“I just didn’t want to relive the nightmare of it. It was a horrible experience.”

At first, she said, she was hoping the show would get halted or would be canceled midway, saying, “There’s a chance, it’s Hollywood, things get canceled a lot.”

That said, Clark’s opinion seemed to change once Ryan Murphy got a hold of the project and signed on as an executive producer. Then, she heard that actress Sarah Paulson was going to portray her, and Clark was thrilled. As it turns out, Paulson is getting major critical praise, and it wouldn’t be surprising if she received an Emmy or Golden Globe nomination for her performance as Marcia.

Whether or not Clark watches the series objectively, she has said that she can watch it because she sees a disconnect between herself and the version that Paulson is portraying. When the trial was on back then, she had to turn the television off to avoid seeing her face.
