Powerball is the most popular lottery game in the United States. Played in 44 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, Powerball is known for having very large jackpots. On Jan. 13, 2016, new changes to the Powerball game resulted in a jackpot that rolled to $1.58 billion. The changes promise that even more large jackpots will come to the game’s future. These large jackpots have helped increase Powerball’s popularity and more people are playing the jackpot lottery game hoping to strike it rich. More Billion Dollar Jackpots Coming

Powerball tickets cost $2 per game and you can add the Power Play multiplier for an additional $1. The game is played by choosing five numbers from white balls ranging between 1 and 69 and one red, Power Ball between the numbers 1 and 26. Because of the increase in balls, it is more difficult to win the Powerball jackpot, which in turn allows the jackpot to roll to greater heights. The game change also means that the odds of winning non-jackpot prizes are increased. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot by matching all five white balls and the red Power Ball are 1 in 292,201,338.00. The Powerball jackpot has been won several times this year. The first jackpot win was on Jan. 13 for the $1.584 billion jackpot and the second win was on March 2 for $291.4 million.

Powerball jackpots reset to $40 million following each jackpot win and continue to roll with each drawing when no one wins the grand prize. While the odds of winning the jackpot are great, the odds of winning any prize are much better. There are nine ways to win at Powerball and anytime someone correctly picks the Power Ball number they win a prize. The odds of winning something at Powerball are 1 in 25. Those who add the Power Play multiplier to their tickets can increase the amount of their non-jackpot wins.

It’s important to note that the Power Play option only increases second-tier, or match 5 wins to $2 million. This differs from Mega Millions games where the multiplier multiplies the amount of second-tier wins. Also, Powerball jackpot may be paid out in yearly installments, but second-tier wins are paid in lump sums. It’s important to remember that Powerball games are a form of gambling and must be handled in a responsible manner. It is easy for some people to become addicted to playing the lottery and in turn, may make risky decisions when hoping to increase their odds of striking it rich. Always play Powerball with money you can afford to lose and be on the lookout for signs of risky behavior. Many find the best way to ensure a fun and responsible game is to set a budget and only buy tickets within your budget.

Are you playing Powerball tonight? Stay tuned as we’ll have the winning numbers, live drawing video and update on all winners. The drawing takes place at 11:00 pm. ET.
