James Gunn Plays Guessing Game With ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Thumbnail Art

Director James Gunn is teasing fans on Twitter and facebook with his Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 thumbnail art. According to Movie Webb the Guardians of the Galaxy thumbnail artwork he’s releasing on social media are all Gunn’s personal hand-drawn sketches. Gunn admitted the sketches are messy and it’s a bit of a guessing game figuring out what is what, but from the fans’ response, it seems like they are enjoying the game.

“So here’s the first in the series of #?WhatWeShotWednesday (that is, today). Can you guess what it might be?” Gunn teased Guardians of the Galaxy fans.

There are hundreds of guesses on James Gunn’s facebook page as to exactly what the sketch is depicting. Most Guardians of the Galaxy fans agreed it was baby Groot, exactly what kind of creature he was holding or what he was doing with it seemed to be up for debate.

Fans on Facebook also thanked Gunn for sharing his creative process during the filming of Guardians of the Galaxy. Some fans wanted to ask how they could get their hands on the Guardians of the Galaxy artwork. Others suggested holding a charity event and auctioning off the art.

One fan asked the question, “Do you keep these even after the movie is done? I feel like you could have thousands just stashed away somewhere.”

“I don’t seem to keep most of them, no. I really should.” Gunn replied.

Gunn will be posting a new piece of thumbnail artwork from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 every Wednesday. James went on to give a little more detail about his process for creating the Guardians of the Galaxy storyboard.

“Recently I mentioned how I draw every single shot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 before we ever shoot a frame,” Gunn wrote on his Facebook page. “I’ll spread whole scenes over my office floor or all around the walls, sometimes hundreds of shots, and it will give me an idea of how the scene flows, what’s smooth, what’s jumbled, and even what works comedically. Over the entire film I draw thousands of these thumbnails…Many of them are messy and it’s impossible for anyone other than me to tell what they are. Some of them get turned over to accomplished storyboard artists to flesh out. Some of them go directly to our pre-visualization team to turn into animated storyboards. And others just stay in their primitive state.”

“Many of you asked to see these drawings so I thought I’d start posting thumbnails of whatever it was we shot that day on ?#?GotGVol2?. I’m not going to explain what the shot is – as I said, they’re messy. But maybe you can match the thumbnail to the shot when the movie is released.”

According to Marvel’s official website, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 started shooting last month in Atlanta, Georgia. The first official Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 photo that was released showcased the silhouettes of all the beloved main characters including Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, and Vin Diesel as Groot.

The official Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy movie synopsis is “Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage.”

Guardians of the Galaxy is not set to hit theaters until May 5, 2017. This can seem like an awful long time for die-hard fans. Fortunately, we can expect a new Guardians of the Galaxy teaser sketch each week from James Gunn. Make sure to check out Gunn’s Facebook page next week for more Guardians of the Galaxy thumbnail art.
