Cole Sprouse All Grown Up: Ready For ‘Riverdale,’ Comparisons To Young DiCaprio

The former star of The Suite Life With Zack and Cody is now Riverdale ready. Cole Sprouse, best known for his role as twin Cody Martin on the show, has now dyed his hair jet black in preparation for his role as Jughead Jones, the man with the insatiable appetite, in what Entertainment Weekly said has been described as “a surprising and subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade.”

Teen Vogue noted that it was a challenge to not see Cole Sprouse without his signature blond hair and that the black hair almost seemed sinister on the younger Sprouse twin. The magazine did add that Cole Sprouse was still just as endearing regardless of the color of his hair.

J-14 also remarked on the comparisons between an adult Cole Sprouse and a younger Leonardo DiCaprio; the comparisons were made as a result of recent photos that Sprouse posted of himself on Twitter, and several fans were excited to see the resemblance.

In the new Riverdale series, Jughead is described as the former best friend of Archie Andrews. It has yet to be revealed what exactly caused the rift between Jughead and Archie, who were famously close in the comics. Judging from the new photos with Cole Sprouse looking every inch the slacker that Jughead is, short of wearing a beanie, Sprouse is ready to take on the role. Just Jared Jr. reports that this version of Jughead is a “heartthrob with a philosophical bent and former best friend of Archie Andrews. He is still smarting from the rift that took place between the two.”

With the new images of Cole Sprouse slumped in a chair and looking serious, he looks more than ready to inherit the role of Jughead. There’s no word yet about how closely the series will align itself with the events of the comic book, so Archie fans should not go looking for Jughead’s pet Hot Dog or Pop’s Soda Shoppe just yet.

Interestingly, Riverdale is being shot in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, which means the series is a homecoming of sorts for Cole Sprouse. Dylan and Cole Sprouse filmed The Suite Life of Zack and Cody in Vancouver, and the Hotel Vancouver doubled as the Hotel Tipton, which is a fictional hotel.

This is not the first time that Cole Sprouse has sported black hair, either; according to MTV News, he and his brother had black hair for at least part of the filming of The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things, a 2004 drama. The Sprouse brothers are quite likely a pair of the few child actors who successfully made it through Hollywood, took a break, and are set to star in their own independent projects without the drama or baggage that seems to plague so many young stars today.

There was, however, a brief nude selfie scandal that hit Dylan Sprouse, but Cole Sprouse hit his brother with usual good humor.

“Cold in that bathroom, huh?” he tweeted.

That hit the twins in 2013, when they were still at New York University (they graduated in 2015), and after some good-natured teasing between Dylan and Cole Sprouse, Dylan admitted he messed up and simply needed to move past it. In fact, according to Hollywood Life, Dylan Sprouse went so far to acknowledge that with the evidence of the selfie out there, it would be completely inappropriate to avoid responsibility.

Clearly, both of the Sprouse brothers have made the most of their hiatus to attend school, and now that the spotlight is currently on Cole Sprouse as he readies himself for the Riverdale pilot, it will be interesting to see how Dylan and Cole Sprouse navigate these waters as grown ups.
