‘Princess Diaries 3’ Might Be Happening After All, Director Shares Plans With Anne Hathaway

It looks like Princess Diaries 3 is happening after all. Rumors of a third installment of the movie that catapulted Anne Hathaway’s career started back in 2015 when Debra Chase, one of the producers, shared that she was on board to produce the third film. However, since then, Disney has not confirmed the news.

The Princess Diaries 3 rumor was eventually crushed when Entertainment Weekly announced that a source close to Disney revealed that the movie was not in development.

Now, however, it seems that the hope for another Princess Diaries movie is alive once more, as director Garry Marshall shared his interest in doing another one. Marshall shared information with People.

“I was with Anne Hathaway a couple of weeks ago, it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan. Anne Hathaway is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we’re going to do it.”

Garry Marshall’s statement is no confirmation, but it’s certainly good news to fans who followed the life of Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) in The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement.

The Princess Diaries is based on Meg Cabot’s novel of the same name. In the first movie, released in 2001, 15-year-old Mia Thermopolis finds out that she is the heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Genovia. Her grandmother, the Queen Dowager Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews), grooms Mia to be the next ruler of Genovia, lest the kingdom be left without a ruler. In the end, Mia Thermopolis accepts the responsibility of ruling Genovia.

The sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, was released in 2004. Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews reprised their roles in a new storyline. It’s five years after the events of the first film, and Mia has just graduated from college. Back in Genovia, the Queen is retiring and is planning to hand the throne to her granddaughter. However, according to law, Mia must first be married before she can be crowned. After a series of events, Mia ends up with Nicholas Devereaux (Chris Pine), the son of a Lord.

In the same interview with Garry Marshall, as MTV reports, he was asked if Chris Pine would be back as Devereaux, Mia’s love interest, in Princess Diaries 3.

“Maybe. He’s quite big now, you know.”

Chris Pine may be interested in playing the role of Nicholas Devereaux once again, as he said to EW in January this year. When asked if he prays every night for a Princess Diaries 3, Pine answered, “Have you been reading my diary?”

There are no details on what storyline Princess Diaries 3 will follow. In addition, if Disney pursues the project, it may be quite a while before we see the third installment onscreen, as Hathaway is expecting her first child and may be taking maternity leave to take care of her newborn.
