Tonight’s WWE RAW show is taking place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which is the hometown of former WWE World Heavyweight Champion and future WWE Hall of Famer, Kurt Angle.
There is a rumor going around that Kurt Angle will make a surprise return to WWE on tonight’s show. The rumor stems from a report that Angle and WWE’s chief operating officer and head of talent relations Paul Levesque, a.k.a Triple H, met during the Arnold Sports Festival over the weekend.
Angle has been in Impact Wrestling, better known as TNA, for nearly a decade, and he didn’t exactly leave WWE under the best of terms; every time he’s become a free-agent since leaving the company, WWE hasn’t shown any interest in bringing him back, hence, he’s always re-signed with TNA.
But now, Angle is done with TNA, as he wrestled his final match for them over the weekend. In an interview several weeks ago, Angle said that he’s not retiring from wrestling, but he’s pretty much done with TNA. Although he didn’t rule out the possibility of a return to the company at some point down the line.
Over the years, Vince McMahon has decided against bringing Kurt Angle back to the company due to Angle’s well-known substance abuse issues. But, it’s been pretty clear over the last couple of years that the 1996 Olympic gold medalist has cleaned up his life.
As for the likelihood of a Kurt Angle return on tonight’s RAW, well, the Wrestling Observer is saying that while you shouldn’t rule it out, there’s almost no chance that Angle will be returning tonight.
“Regarding the Kurt Angle rumors, while you never can say never in wrestling, WWE has consistently not been interested in him in ten years. Regarding the report we had of Triple H and Angle seeing each other at the Arnold Fitness Expo last week, according to those close to the situation, while both were there, the report was not the case and there was no interaction between the two.”
The Kurt Angle return rumor is a bit out of left field. Sure, RAW is taking place from his hometown, but if he were to return, we’d almost certainly know that he’d be appearing on the show well in advance.
There’s really not a place for Angle on the WrestleMania 32 card if he were to return, unless they stick him with Rusev, who may be involved in a mixed-tag-team match with his fiance Lana at the event, as she’ll presumably be taking on Brie Bella. Obviously, Brie’s husband Daniel Bryan can’t wrestle, and Rusev is the perfect opponent for Angle. So if WWE is planning a mixed-tag, that could be the match they stick Angle in.
Tonight’s RAW show is completely stacked, with AJ Styles, Chris Jericho, Shane McMahon, Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon, Undertaker, Triple H, Brock Lesnar, and Paul Heyman all being advertised to appear. Furthermore, there have been reports that both Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns will be returning during the show. So there doesn’t really seem to be any room for Kurt Angle on tonight’s RAW.
But, as the Wrestling Observer noted, you should never say never. It is WrestleMania season, and WWE is trying to get as many eyes on their product as possible. Bringing Kurt Angle back would certainly draw a lot of attention.
Tonight’s RAW should be a very interesting show, and it has all the potential to be a very memorable episode. Whether it turns out to be memorable or not remains to be seen.
