Racist Tweet Gets Michel Morganella Kicked Off Swiss Olympic Soccer Team

Another athlete will miss out on Olympic glory all because of social media stupidity. Michel Morganella, a soccer player for the Swiss Olympic team, has been expelled from the 2012 London Olympic team due to a racist tweet.

Swiss Olympic team chief Gian Gilli announced today that Morganella would not be playing with Switzerland for the rest of the 2012 London Olympics.

According to the Associated Press Morganella’s offensive message came after the Swiss team lost to South Korea 2-1 on Sunday.

Gilli said:

“(Morganella) discriminated against, insulted and violated the dignity of the South Korea football team as well as the South Korean people.”

Morganella’s account has been deleted but 101GreatGoals.com was able to capture a screenshot of the 23-year-old defender’s tweet.

The message, according to the translators at We Are Football, reads:

“I want to beat up all South Koreans! Bunch of mentally handicapped retards! (“Je les tous Defonce Coréens, allez vous tous Bruler, bande de trisos”)

Morganella has apologized for his comments but the Swiss team will be moving on without him.

Morganella isn’t the first player to lose his spot in the Olympics due to a Twitter flub.

Greece triple jumper Voula Papachristou was also kicked off her Olympic team after sending a racist message out on Twitter.

Do you think Michel Morganella should have been expelled? When will athletes realize that posting stupid things to Twitter comes with consequences?
