‘General Hospital’ Rebecca Herbst Breaks Her Silence About Her Tense Contract Negotiations–Addresses Rumors Of Her Departure

General Hospital fans have been on the edge of their seats as they await the news if Rebecca Herbst would sign her new contract, or walk away from the ABC soap opera. It was looking pretty grim for a while; however, in the last hour, ABC was able to come to terms that both parties agreed to, and Becky landed a three-year contract.

Rebecca sat down with Michael Logan to talk about the tense contract negotiations, her fans, and if she was considering walking away to appear on another soap opera. Herbst looked cheerful, upbeat, and most of all excited about her contract agreement with ABC.

Celeb Dirty Laundry noted it was difficult for her to remain mute about her contract status; however, it’s a rule that they cannot speak about it. Herbst explained that her fans are some of the most loyal fans out there, and she felt confident they would follow her to another soap opera if that’s what she chose to do. Rebecca credits her fans as being the ones that helped her make the right choice, and not losing hope in the fight to get the contract details worked out over the past few months.

“They literally got me through the contract [talks] day by day. When I was doubting myself, and thinking that I might not be able to stay on GH, I would read their comments on the Internet and feel so secure in whatever decision I made. I knew it was going to be okay, no matter what. They sent flowers and cupcakes. Everything they did throughout the last two months has been remarkable. I wish I could hug them all.”

Rebecca wanted to clear up the rumor that she was unhappy with General Hospital. She explained that was completely false. At the end of the day, Rebecca is an actor that is paid well to do her job and make Elizabeth Webber come to life every day. Herbst explained that she wasn’t dissatisfied with the Jake/Jason storyline either. She noted it was fun, and she embraced it even though she knew that it would result in fan backlash. Rebecca stated she was looking forward to the writers redeeming Liz in the coming months.

“I’m an actor. I go in and do what’s on the page and then I go home. I don’t believe it’s my place to dictate storyline. People were saying that I was upset about the Jake/Jason story when, in fact, I embraced it. It ended up being a lot of fun. This was just a really long and difficult and [laughs] highly emotional negotiation this time.”

Rebecca couldn’t confirm if she were in talks with Days Of Our Lives or not as part of her contract agreement; however, she did state that multiple soap operas contacted her should she decide to leave General Hospital. Herbst noted that one particular soap opera went as far as to nudge her to leave ABC to come to their show.

When pressed to reveal the reasons for the contract stall, Rebecca wouldn’t say. She explained that General Hospital’s executive producer, Frank Valentini, was the one who made it happen, and she has a renewed respect for him. Herbst thanked the fans for supporting her for 19 years on the show.

“I can’t talk about the specifics, but I kind of equate it to this: When you work together with a company for this long of a period you become a family, and from that you fight like family. And we did fight! But a good thing came out of this. [Executive producer] Frank Valentini and I had a lot of heart-to-hearts, and I have a newfound respect for him and for how much he loves the show. I walked into his office thinking nobody could love GH as much as I do, but I can see that he really, honestly, wants this show to do well.”
