Are ‘Supernatural’ And ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Being Cancelled — The CW Finally Issues Official Word On Both

Fans have been waiting and waiting, but they did not know what the fate of their favorite shows would be. The CW held their hearts in their hands and did something on Friday that was rather unprecedented and unexpected. While many have wondered if shows like Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries would be cancelled, The CW not only renewed them but gave early renewals to every current series on its network.

Deadline confirmed that all 11 series on The CW got the renewal treatment, and it’s a move that no one really saw coming.

Yes, all 10 series that are on the air right now, and the returning Reign will be on the air next season as well for The CW. It’s not yet known if Containment is going to be renewed, but that decision may not happen until May since the series doesn’t even premiere until April 19.

Beauty and the Beast is already returning in the summer for a fourth season, which will also be its final one.

Many fans have been wondering if Supernatural was going to return for a 12th season even though ratings have continued to be very good. Not many television series have the longevity that it has had, but the ratings justify its return each and every season.

Even more were curious about the return of The Vampire Diaries for an eighth season. In an odd note, Kat Graham, who plays the role of Bonnie Bennett, has even said that it seems like the right time for the New Orleans drama to hang it up, according to People’s Choice.

“I think that it could be the right time, yes. I think that it’s important to go out when the show is strong and I think it’s important to see characters storylines’ through. And you know what? If it was the last season, I would still be thrilled because seven years on a show is a beautiful journey.”

While she would be alright with Season 7 being the last, Graham certainly won’t be disappointed with another being granted to The Vampire Diaries.

The full slate of shows returning and renewed by The CW on Friday are below.

  • The Flash – Season 3
  • DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – Season 2
  • Arrow – Season 5
  • The 100 – Season 4
  • Jane the Virgin – Season 3
  • Supernatural – Season 12
  • The Vampire Diaries – Season 8
  • iZombie – Season 3
  • The Originals – Season 4
  • Reign – Season 4
  • Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – Season 2

Legends of Tomorrow has done well even though it hasn’t been met as well as The Flash in terms of comic book TV series. Still, it took half a season for The Flash to truly catch on as well, and now it’s one of the best shows on television, along with Arrow.

Word has it that stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki already had deals in place to cover Seasons 12 and 13 of Supernatural if they are and were to happen. Mark Pedowitz, the president of The CW, loves the show and wants it going on as long as it possibly can.

Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley were set to have their contracts run out on The Vampire Diaries after the current season, but they’ve reportedly signed on to return as well. It’s not surprising either, as one would think that The CW wouldn’t have renewed the show if those two weren’t coming back.

The CW has gotten some true and perfect hits with some of their series, so it’s no surprise that they are continuing on with them. Always going with what works is a way to keep the momentum rolling, and not cancelling Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, and shows like The Flash and The 100 are perfect ways to keep old fans and bring in new viewers with their longevity.
