Hope Solo Blasts Analyst Brandi Chastain On Twitter

Hope Solo isn’t too happy with former soccer player-turned color commentator Brandi Chastain. Shortly after the U.S. Women’s soccer team scored a 3-0 victory against Colombia, Solo bashed Chastain on Twitter for her analysis of the game.

Chastain was particularly critical of Solo’s teammate, defender Rachel Buehler. In the match’s 20th minute, Chastain said,

“As a defender, your responsibilities are to defend … win the ball, and then keep possession. And that’s something that Rachel Buehler actually needs to improve on in this tournament.”

Chastain’s commentary might not sound too incendiary, but Solo might still be annoyed by something Chastain said before the Olympics began. About a week and a half ago, Chastain told Larry Brown Sports that Solo’s positive drug test was an unnecessary distraction for her team right before the Olympic Games. Chastain said,

“It’s news that they don’t need. As athletes, we have to be more careful. Whether you’ve been told one time something is OK, it’s always good to double and triple and quadruple check. Something as innocuous as a cold medication to clear up the sniffles could derail not only you as an individual, but perhaps a whole team. I was disappointed that it came up because for as careful as I think everybody is, I think we could all go without some medication for a short amount of time and not suffer too greatly.”

The drug Solo tested positive for was Canrenone, which is prohibited by USADA, WADA, and FIFA. She was given a warning by USADA when said she was prescribed the drug for “pre-menstrual purposes” and was unaware it contained a diuretic.

In response to the comments, Hope Solo used her Twitter account to bash Chastain. Solo tweeted,

She continued,

Brandi Chastain has, so far, not responded to Solo’s tirade.

Was Hope Solo’s reaction uncalled for, or did she have a reason to be upset?
