‘The Vampire Diaries’ Canceled? Ian Somerhalder Blames Nina Dobrev

The Vampire Diaries’ time could be coming to an end. The fan favorite CW series is rumored to be circling around the dreaded word no actor wants to hear, cancellation, and Ian Somerhalder is not happy about it.

According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, The Vampire Diaries cancellation talk is getting to Ian Somerhalder, who plays the hunky Damon Salvatore on the show. Ian is allegedly upset about the possibility of the show ending and is blaming it all on his ex-girlfriend and former co-star Nina Dobrev.

There are signs that The Vampire Diaries being canceled is coming, and soon. Once it was announced that Nina Dobrev would be leaving the show has main character Elena Gilbert the ratings began to fall, and now that Elena is officially gone Ian Somerhalder’s show has only half the viewers it once did with Dobrev appeared on the series.

The ratings fall also pushed The Vampire Diaries into the 8 p.m. time slot on Friday night, which is a time when not a lot of people watch television. A Friday night air date is usually the last step before pulling the plug on a show, and the loyal viewers are getting worried that the series will soon be gone for good.

Why did Nina Dobrev leave the show in the first place? The actress claimed that after six seasons, she was ready to move on and pursue bigger and better things. However, fans believe that her breakup with Ian Somerhalder had a lot to do with it.

While Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder seemed to remain friends and very close after their split, that all changed when Ian began dating Nikki Reed. Nikki allegedly caused trouble on set for Somerhalder and Dobrev, and Nina just wasn’t having it anymore. As a result, she left the series, and Ian married Nikki a few months later.

Currently, The Vampire Diaries has put Elena in a magical sleep coma that is linked with Bonnie Bennett’s life. When Bonnie dies, only then will Elena wake up. However, Bonnie could die at any moment or 70 years down the road. Damon doesn’t want to live without Elena and has decided to sleep away the days until they can be together again. However, Season 7 villain Rana Cruz has other ideas and is trying to kill both Salvatore brothers.

Some fans believe that if The Vampire Diaries does get canceled, some of the characters could transition over to the spinoff show, The Originals. Caroline would be the main character who would likely move to the show, as she and lead character Klaus have always had a love connection. If Caroline goes, that could mean Alaric and his daughters could also transition, and Bonnie, being the power witch that she is, could also be useful. However, bringing Damon and Stefan along would be pointless, as it would be too much like their current show and leave fans with too many male leading characters.

If The Vampire Diaries does get canceled, there may be one bright side to the situation, and that could be a Damon and Elena reunion. Fans are hoping that Nina Dobrev will return for the series finale of the show, no matter when that is, so that Elena and Damon can have their happy ending and that fans can have closure. Ending the show any other way but having Damon and Elena together will anger loyal viewers who have been watching their relationship unfold for years and are very invested in the “Delena” relationship. Of course, Stefan would also need a happy ending, possibly with Valerie.
