Powerball is the most popular lottery game played in 44 states within the United States, Washington D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The game is known for having large jackpots that reset to $40 million after the jackpot is win. The game costs $2 per play and you can choose to add the Power Play multiplier to your ticket or tickets. This helps to increase the amount of non jackpot prizes won. If you want to find out if Powerball is played within your state, you can check with the official website for information regarding where the game is played.
Winning the Powerball jackpot is always a dream come true; however, it isn’t the only way to win with the popular lottery game. There are nine ways to win and each offers it’s own prizes as well as have differing winning odds. The top or grand prize is to match all six Powerball numbers (five white balls and one red Power Ball) for the jackpot. The Power Play multiplier can’t be used on jackpot prizes and those who win the jackpot have one of two choices regarding payout.
Receiving the jackpot in a lump sum payout is a popular choice for Powerball winners. When choosing a lump sum payout, the estimated value of the jackpot is given instead of the full cash value. Winners are still responsible for paying appropriate state and federal taxes on their winnings as well.
The other choice for Powerball jackpot winners is to receive a cash annuity. Those who choose this option will receive an upfront payout upon claiming their winning ticket. Then, they will receive annual payments on an increasing scale. By choosing to receive a cash annuity, you will receive the full amount of the winnings. Those who choose this option can select someone to leave their winnings to should they pass away. This is a great way to ensure that if something should happen to you, your loved one will continue to enjoy the benefits of your lucky win.
Those who win the Powerball jackpot should speak to an attorney, financial planner and tax expert. You will want to make sure you understand the best strategy for spending, investing and handling your money.
