??Melissa McCarthy?’s Sookie St James Joining ?Yanic Truesdale For ‘Gilmore Girls’ Netflix Revival?

Is Melissa McCarthy’s Sookie coming back to Gilmore Girls? People reports that Gilmore Girls co-star Yanic Truesdale took a selfie with Melissa McCarthy — and the photo seems to suggest that a reunion for the two on the show is possible. Although in the caption of the picture, Truesdale was sure to let his fans know not to read too much into it, though that certainly won’t stop fans from speculating and hoping.

Yanic Truesdale is definitely joining the Netflix Gilmore Girls revival, reprising his role as Michel Gerard. Fans are also hoping that Melissa McCarthy will reprise her role as Sookie St. James and join this Gilmore Girls revival on Netflix. But there may be one very good reason as to why McCarthy won’t be on the show this time around: Melissa McCarthy has become a pretty big movie star within the last several years, even headlining a television series (Mike & Molly), and she’s probably just too busy.

That’s certainly what Gilmore Girls creator and writer, Amy Sherman-Palladino, seemed to suggest. Would Amy love to have Melissa, 45, back on set with the rest of the cast? Of course she would, but she also understands that it just may not happen due to a hectic schedule.

“She’s really f***ing busy,” Sherman-Palladino said to TVLine, putting it very bluntly. “But the thing I have said [to her team] is, ‘Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I’ll write her a scene.’ Melissa was one of us. If she has a spare moment to run over [to the set] – even if for just a cameo – we would be totally game. And if it’s a last-minute thing, I would write her in and we would figure it out. That’s the way we left it.”

It’s nice to know that the Gilmore Girls cast and crew still feel like a family, and while the set may not be blessed with the presence of Melissa McCarthy, Sookie being absent will be explained in the show. From the minute the Gilmore Girls Netflix revival was greenlit, Sherman-Palladino knew she would not be able to give the character a story. It would be difficult enough to juggle storylines between Lauren Graham’s Lorelai Gilmore and Alexis Bledel’s Rory Gilmore, along with the other characters. And to find something good for Sookie, while working on McCarthy’s schedule, would simply be too much and far too taxing of a job.

With that being said, anything is possible. Maybe Melissa McCarthy will be able to squeeze in one day on set, even if it’s just for an hour, and have a quick cameo. There’s no shame in keeping hope alive.

Netflix originally announced on January 29 that Lauren Graham (Lorelai Gilmore) and Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore) had signed on to reprise their roles in Gilmore Girls for Netflix, which will be producing four 90-minute long episodes. Many other cast members will also be returning, including Scott Patterson (who played Luke), Sean Gunn (who played Kirk), David Sutcliffe (who played Christopher), Kieko Agena (who played Lane), Michael Winters (who played Taylor), Liza Weil (who played Paris), Liz Torres (who played Miss Patty), as well as Sally Struthers (who played Babette).

Melissa McCarthy, meanwhile, will be starring in Paul Feig’s reboot of the ’80s classic Ghostbusters, playing the role of Abby Yates. The synopsis reads as follows.

“Ghostbusters makes its long-awaited return, rebooted with a cast of hilarious new characters. Thirty years after the beloved original franchise took the world by storm, director Paul Feig brings his fresh take to the supernatural comedy, joined by some of the funniest actors working today – Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. This summer, they’re here to save the world!”
