Nia Vardalos Walks The Aussie Red Carpet For ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’ Premiere

Stock up on the Windex because My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is coming. Lead actress Nia Vardalos showed up at the movie’s Sydney premiere on March 6 with many of her real-life relatives at her side.

Vardalos clearly had fun while walking the Aussie red carpet as she posted images to her official Twitter and Instagram accounts. Vardalos wore a pretty pink dress and had her hair in an updo while holding a white and gold clutch. The actress thanked Jessica Paster for styling her for the Sydney premiere.

Planners for the Sydney premiere certainly did their homework as they featured many items featured throughout the film. Bottles of Windex wrapped with red bows were on display, and were the evening’s party gifts.

The premiere’s red carpet event was actually white, complete with accessories that paid homage to the Greek flag colors.

In true Greek fashion, Nia Vardalos did not show up to the Sydney premiere alone, she brought many of her Australian based relatives with her. Vardalos revealed in The Daily Telegraph that she asked for 50 tickets to the event just to cover her family.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 premieres in the U.S. on March 25, after a long wait since the 2002 My Big Fat Greek Wedding film opened in movie theaters, and became a huge sleeper hit, making a total of $368 million worldwide. Vardalos, who writes and stars in both films, talked to ET Canada about why it took so long to come up with a sequel to her biggest hit.

“I had written that my character is a mom at the end of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Toula is a mom, but I myself was not a mom. I can’t write things that I don’t know. It’s just that simple.”

Nia Vardalos and her husband, actor Ian Gomez, who also co-stars in the My Big Fat Greek Wedding films, adopted a daughter in 2008 and afterwards, Vardalos finally could write about material that is featured in the sequel.

Many of the cast members from the first movie are back to reprise their roles, including John Corbett, who plays Vardalos’ on-screen husband. Corbett was the first person Vardalos sent the sequel’s script to after she finished writing it. Corbett had a good laugh on why Vardalos trusted him to read the script, and not leak the plot to the public, according to ET Canada.

“She didn’t even send it to her parents because she thought the Greek part of them would go throughout the community and tell the whole story within about 18 minutes.”

In the sequel, Nia Vardalos’ character, Toula Miller, is now a mother to a teenager, played by Elena Kampouris, who experiences her own embarrassment from her proud Greek-American relatives. While Toula and her husband Ian, played by Corbett, try to keep the romance alive in their marriage, it is revealed that Toula’s parents’ marriage was never legally binding in their home country, making it the premise for the next “big fat Greek wedding.”

Back in January, Vardalos told the Los Angeles Times that the lack of good material for actresses also helped inspire her to write My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.

“If I am looking for scripts, if Gwyneth Paltrow is looking for scripts and Sandra Bullock is looking for scripts, surely Andrea Martin and Lainie Kazan are looking for scripts. That’s why I beefed up their roles. We have to write for each other.”
