Four Of Mother Teresa’s Nuns Murdered In Violent Yemen Terrorist Attack, Pope Francis Decries ‘Diabolical Violence’

Four of Mother Teresa’s nuns were murdered in cold blood while working at a home for the elderly in Yemen. The nuns were from the order established by Mother Teresa that was charged with running a care home for aging patients. Reports indicate that gunmen entered the building and handcuffed the nuns, along with many of the elderly patients, before shooting them in the head. No terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack but the Yemen government claims the attack was orchestrated by the Islamic State.

The Daily Mail reports four nuns from Mother Teresa’s order were murdered after gunmen entered a care home they were operating in Yemen. The nuns were allegedly handcuffed before the attackers shot them all methodically in the head. Along with the four nuns, twelve other people were also murdered in the horrifying terror attack that Pope Francis is calling a “senseless act of diabolical violence.”

Pope Francis decried the violence and said that he “prays that this pointless slaughter will awaken consciences, lead to a change of heart, and inspire all parties to lay down their arms and take up the path of dialogue.” Pope Francis was noted as saddened and shocked by the murders while noting that he is sending his “spiritual closeness” to the families of the deceased.

“He sends the assurance of his prayers for the dead and his spiritual closeness to their families and to all affected from this act of senseless and diabolical violence.”

According to reports, the gunmen entered the elderly care home ran by the Mother Teresa nuns by claiming to be at the home to visit their mothers. Upon entering the building, the men brandished their weapons and handcuffed their 16 captives, including the four nuns. The men then methodically shot each handcuffed victim in the head.

The deceased nuns were reportedly from three different countries including two of the nuns from Rwanda, one from India and one from Kenya. Sunita Kuman, the spokesperson for the Missionaries of Charity in India reports that the organization was shocked when they learned of the Sisters’ deaths and that it was especially difficult as the nuns had been scheduled to return to India but had opted to stay longer in order to care for their patients.

“The Sisters were to come back but they opted to stay on to serve people in Yemen.”

According to Time, Pope Francis is mourning the loss of the four Sisters. He says that each woman “gave their blood for the Church” and that the nuns were victims of not only the diabolical attackers but also victims of “this indifference of globalization.” The official report from the Vatican on the deaths notes the deaths have renewed the Church’s commitment to the people of Yemen and those most in need.

“In the name of God, he calls upon all parties in the present conflict to renounce violence, and to renew their commitment to the people of Yemen, particularly those most in need, whom the Sisters and their helpers sought to serve. Upon everyone suffering from this violence, the Holy Father invokes God’s blessing, and in a special ways he extends to the Missionaries of Charity his prayerful sympathy and solidarity.”

Do you agree with Pope Francis that the nuns served as modern day martyrs by giving “their blood for the Church?”
