Sports Authority Closure List: 140 Stores Closing In 2016
Sports Authority filed for bankruptcy earlier this month, and now they are closing 140 stores across the United States.
The Englewood, Colorado-based retail chain, owned by Los Angeles-based private equity firm Leonard Green & Partners, cited a debt of 1.1 billion during their bankruptcy filing on Wednesday. Sports Authority CEO Michael Foss spoke to the Denver Post, and said their sales plummeted when they failed to keep up with current consumer trends.
“When only one company competed in a particular market, then you generally had a consistent look and feel for customers,” Foss said. “Then you had many markets where there were two or three of those companies competing against one another, and even though we changed the name to Sports Authority, we had many different looks and feels in markets, which kind of confused customers because they tend to shop multiple stores.”

“We have some inefficiency in the system and that’s hurt us from a sales and profitability point of view,” Foss added.
Below is the complete list of Sports Authority stores that will be closing, and liquidating their products, in 2016. The list of store closures includes 25 stores in Texas, 19 in California, 18 in Florida and 11 in Illinois.
