When playing Mega Millions, you will begin by purchasing a ticket for $1 and choosing your numbers. You can choose the numbers yourself, or let the terminal select them randomly through a Quick Pick. Some people prefer to select numbers and then play the same numbers each game. Mega Millions consists of six balls that feature five white balls ranging from the numbers 1 to 75 and one gold Mega Ball ranging from the numbers 1 to 15. Those who match all six winning numbers win the jackpot or grand prize. There are two payout options for those who win. First, you may choose to claim all of the money in the jackpot through a cash annuity option. With the cash annuity option, the winner receives one initial payout, then other payouts are given on an annual basis. The other choice is to receive the winnings in a one-time lump sum payout. With the lump sum payout, the winner receives the estimated cash value that is less than the amount paid with the annuity option.
In addition to purchasing your ticket, Mega Millions players can add the Mega Millions multiplier that will increase the amount of non-jackpot wins. The multiplier costs an additional $1, but for many winners who have had their prizes increased, it was worth it. The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 258,890,850. The odds of winning the match 5 are 1 in 18,492,204.
