Planetside 2 Amazes Gamers With A Spectacular CGI Trailer

Planetside 2, the upcoming first person shooter from Sony Online Entertainment (SOE), raised the bar for anticipation with the unveiling of a spectacular CGI trailer. The three minute long video made its debut today, July 25, 2012, at the 2012 China Digital Entertainment Expo & Conference.

While it should be pointed out that to play an MMO with the level of graphics seen in the trailer would require a bank of super computers, Planetside 2 does offer all the latest in stunning imagery. To their credit, SOE did include a disclaimer at the beginning of the trailer that stated, “Not actual game play.”

According to Sony, “The sequel to the landmark MMO FPS has been revealed and is bigger and better than ever. PlanetSide 2 is a massively multi-player online first person shooter that delivers truly epic, massive combat on a scale never before seen in stunning, breathtaking detail. Battles wage with literally thousands of players aligning with one of three unique factions in intense land, air and vehicle game play where the fight for territory is more than a victory, its survival.”

Sony went on to describe Planetside 2 combat as follows: “Thousands of players will come together in enormous battles to win control of critical territories and key resources for their empire. With a an extensive skill tree and free-form class-based system, players will be able to customize their soldier, weapons and vehicles to match their play-style, as well as the needs of their squad, outfit or empire. Battles can last for days or weeks, so players will need to build alliances and specialized combat outfits to take on long-term strategic and tactical initiatives. With air and ground combat, the battles will be larger and more intense than ever.”

PlanetSide 2 is a science fiction MMOFPS that takes place on the planet of Auraxis. It is set approximately 300 years after the discovery of Auraxis and involves the struggles between three factions; The Terran Republic, The New Conglomerate and The Vanu Sovereignty, for control of the planet.

The Terran Republic is run by a powerful, authoritarian government that uses military might to enforce its obsessive demand for law and order on its citizens. Although some may object to the methods, the Terran Republic is seen by many as the only means to bring stability to Auraxis.

The New Conglomerate, depending on your point of view, are either rebels, terrorists or freedom fighters. What everyone can agree on, is that they are totally against everything the Terran Republic stands for and that they will use any and all means, to defeat their enemy.

The Vanu Sovereignty has a single purpose on Auraxis; to uncover all the new technology that is strewn across the surface of the planet. The highly advanced Vanu use alien weapons and technology on the battlefield, as they try to force humanity to evolve to a higher level of existence.

The game, which is expected to debut at the end of 2012 or early in 2013, will be based on a free to play model. Planetside 2 will offer gamers all the chaos and excitement of the original Planetside, while making use advanced gaming technology; built around the new Forgelight gaming engine.

Players who are interested in joining the beta may apply on the Planetside 2 website. If the game itself lives up to the action shown in today’s CGI trailer, fans of MMOFPS’s are in for a treat.
