Not since January 31, 1952, have the Gunners met Spurs with as much on the line as the two teams will have on Saturday. In 1952, Arsenal sat in third place just one point off the top, while Tottenham stood sixth, five points from the league lead.
But when the archrivals kick off at White Hart Lane on what in London will be just after lunchtime on Saturday, Tottenham occupies second place, a mere three points behind surprising Leicester City, who have refused to relinquish their unlikely hold on the Premier League lead. Arsenal remain in third place, just three points behind Spurs and six off the Leicester pace.
After Saturday’s matches, both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will have just nine games left to play in the 2015/2016 Barclays Premier League season, as will Leicester City.
According to soccer statistics expert Michael Caley, despite Leicester’s continued grip on the top spot, the winner, if there is one, of Saturday’s massive North London Derby will become the new favorite to win the League title — something that Arsenal has not achieved since 2004. For Spurs, the title drought is even longer than for their rivals — 55 years to be exact. Tottenham has never won the title in the Premier League era, which began in 1992, and last wore the erstwhile Football League First Division crown in 1961.

Saturday’s match will be the third North London Derby of the current season. The two teams first met in a Capital One Cup elimination match back on September 23, in a contest won 2-1 by Arsenal. But both teams made extensive changes to their starting XI for that match.
