ABC Renews ‘Grey’s Anatomy?,’ ?’Scandal?,’ ?’Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.?,’ And Much More

ABC currently has a slew of top-quality television programming, and today the network announced that a number of their shows have been renewed for additional seasons — 15 shows to be exact! It looks like a lot of people in Hollywood get to continue working for the 2016-2017 season.

Of course, TGIT’s Shonda Rhimes has had three of her shows renewed on ABC: Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away With Murder, and Scandal will all return for additional seasons, reports Variety. Grey’s Anatomy is the longest running of them all, having been renewed for season 13, Scandal will return for a sixth season and HTGAWM has been renewed for season 3. For ABC, the renewal of these three shows were an absolute no-brainer and a very wise decision, as they are three of the network’s most successful and critically-praised shows.

ABC tends to wait until May before they give the greenlight on returning shows, right before they start their presentation to advertisers in the fall. But Channing Dungey, the new ABC Entertainment chief, announced the news and seems to be handling things a bit differently than her predecessor. Announcing these show-renewals this early in the year allows showrunners/producers to hire new writers and renew contracts with actors, if necessary.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is currently in its third season on ABC and will be returning for a fourth. The show, loosely based on Marvel Comics characters, stars Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Henry Simmons as well as Luke Mitchell. As for its spinoff series, Marvel’s Most Wanted — starring Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood — no updates have been given on the status of the project.

Quantico was very popular during ABC’s 2015-16 fall season and the show’s star, Priyanka Chopra, continues ABC’s streak of diverse-female leads. So with all of that, it’s no surprise that the FBI drama has been renewed for a second season. Chopra is already working on her movie career, playing the role of Victoria Leeds in the upcoming 2017 film-adaptation of Baywatch, with Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. Quantico returns from its mid-season break Sunday, March 6.

ABC’s Black-ish is being hailed as one of the best comedies on television and it also has been renewed for a third season. During this current second season, the show’s ratings have picked up as the series tackles issues within the African-American community such as police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement. The comedy stars Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Marcus Scribner, Miles Brown, Marsai Martin, Yara Shahidi, Jennifer Lewis, and Laurence Fishburne.

Fresh Off The Beat is another comedy with a diverse cast for ABC, and the series has been renewed for a third season. The show is also the only sitcom on television that is centered on an Asian-American family, with its breakout star, Constance Wu, receiving nothing but praise. Another comedy that was renewed is The Middle, and will return for its eighth season. One of the longest-running comedies for the network, the show stars Patricia Heaton, Neil Flynn, Charlie McDermott, and Eden Sher.

Four reality shows will be returning: America’s Funniest Home Videos is coming back to ABC for season 27, The Bachelor has been renewed for season 21, Dancing With the Stars will reach season 23 and Shark Tank will return for season 8.

ABC’s The Goldbergs has been renewed for a fourth season, Modern Family will return for season 8 and Once Upon a Time will return for season 6.

“We’re very proud of our strong roster of performers, and we’re excited about what they will bring us creatively next season,” Channing Dungey said.

Dr. Ken, Castle, Agent Carter, Nashville, The Muppets, Last Man Standing, and Galavant are the only ABC shows that have yet to be renewed for additional seasons.
