‘Far Cry Primal’ Map Allegedly Borrowed From ‘Far Cry 4’ — Is Ubisoft Recycling Their Ideas?

The Far Cry Primal map might not seem familiar at first, but it has been discovered that it shares many similarities with Ubisoft’s last numbered entry. While it was known that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was a futuristic parody of the open-world genre, it also shared a similar map with the game it succeeded.

While Blood Dragon was a smaller game with a lower price, Primal is a full-featured game. It’s almost comparable to what Deep Silver did with Saints Row: Gat out of Hell, using the same engine as Saints Row IV, but changing the environment and altering some elements.

Some might accuse Ubisoft of getting lazy and recycling older ideas. The Far Cry Primal map heavily borrows some features of its map from that of Far Cry 4, as revealed when Game Pressure took screen shots of both maps and highlighted features of both. As reported by VG247, the highlighted areas are the same basic shape, meaning that the developers may have simply decided against creating a new map, just changing some elevations to make it fresh.

Other times that Ubisoft allegedly recycled ideas from previous games included Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. In that game, you have access to a tool you can use to cross chasms using a rope, or a grappling tool to aid in speeding your ascent to a higher level. This sounds a lot like the line launcher and bat grapple from the Batman: Arkham series.

If that wasn’t enough, Syndicate also allows you to throw a driver off a carriage and steal it for yourself, much like you do in every Grand Theft Auto game since the upgrade to 3D environments.

The Far Cry Primal map isn’t the only thing allegedly taken from its predecessor. It has been said that the entire game is just a re-skin of the adventures of Ajay Ghale, and it mostly is. However, the shooting part of the game was replaced entirely with melee weapons and other primitive instruments of death. The fights are intentionally up close and dirty, with a focus on survival and helping your tribe thrive in the wake of the ice age.

Sharing the map with Far Cry 4 might not be so bad for Primal, since FC4 was praised for its open-world gameplay and charismatic villain, Pagan Min. Combining the freedom of taking a mini-copter or glider wherever you wanted, it gave you options for how you wanted to take down various strongholds in the fictional (yet suspiciously Indian) nation of Kyrat.

The similarity in the maps from Far Cry 4 and Primal could also be a sign that Ubisoft has been spreading themselves too thin, and not realizing how much they’re doing over and over. Gamers have been complaining that Assassin’s Creed has been the same game since it began, even though they rebuilt it from the ground up in Unity and refined everything in Syndicate. After realizing that the franchise was getting less and less profitable, they’ve decided to take a year off to re-focus and figure out how to make the franchise fresh again.

Considering that Far Cry 4 and Primal are only two years apart, the map similarities might be a sign of recycling too much. It could also be pure coincidence.

Do you think Ubisoft is running out of original ideas, or are we just being too picky?
