Why El Chapo Wants To Be Extradited To The United States

Joaquin El Chapo Guzman has, for some time now, been said to be undergoing tremendous psychological torture while in prison. According to his wife – Emma Coronel Aispuro — his health has greatly deteriorated following his incarceration. The following was her statement, according to an interview aired by Telemundo.

“I, the current partner of Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman, reveals that Mr. Joaquín Guzmán is in seriously poor health, this because since coming to Cefereso del Altiplano en Almoloya de Juárez (Prison) for over a month now, he has not been able to sleep because of the constant are roll call, seemingly every hour.

“And in the course of coming back from every roll call, the people who guard do not stop talking and making noise and because of this situation, cannot sleep day or night.”

This is as reported by Borderland Beat.

Having escaped from prison last year through a tunnel that started out in a secluded section in hís jail, he was able to elude authorities for about six months before being traced and arrested in the town of Los Mochis. And right now, the authorities seem to be trying to make him pay for his previous escape by applying psychological pressure. The incident was not only a huge embarrassment for them, but also for President Enrique Peña Nieto as he had sought to raise the credibility of his government and its efforts in combating drug trafficking by capturing the kingpin. The following is a report of his reaction after getting the news of El Chapo’s escape while on a plane heading to France in July last year.

“They all remained mute, paralyzed. Peña asked how long until arrival in Gander [in Canada]. They told him less than two hours. There were no conditions to discuss the subject on the plane.

” ‘We are going to finish,’ ordered Peña, pointing to the dominoes.

“He won with fours.”

The president is said to have sent Osorio, the interior minister, back to Mexico the next day to handle the situation. When El Chapo was recaptured in January this year, Pena Nieto could not wait to announce to the whole world that the drug lord was back behind bars, making the announcement via Twitter. The following was his message.

“Mission accomplished: We have him. I would like to inform Mexicans that Joaquin Guzmán Loera has been detained.”

To which Ivan Guzman — El Chapo’s son — replied on Twitter, saying, “Just as we put you in the presidency, we can just as easily take you out.”

This is as reported by the Daily Mail.

Such actions and the ever-present danger of losing El Chapo again due to his influence and present judicial loopholes may have caused the Mexican government to try and manipulate Guzman into accepting extradition. By giving him sleepless nights and denying him visits from loved ones and even his lawyers, they may have intentionally managed to make him beg for extradition, as that way, the process will be easier and he will be America’s problem.

And as things stand, El Chapo has already, through his lawyer, offered to plead guilty to drug trafficking charges in America, but in exchange for a lenient sentence to be served in a medium security prison. This is mainly due to the harsh treatment he is receiving at Altiplano prison. This is as reported by NBC Chicago.

Meanwhile, his organization’s drug trafficking business continues unabated. His sons and Ismael Zambada Garcia are said to have taken over the reins of the Sinaloa cartel following his arrest.
