Grey’s Anatomy: Sarah Drew On April’s Shocking News, ‘There’s A Tremendous Sense Of Hope’

Only three episodes of Grey’s Anatomy have aired so far this season, and it already appears that we will get to see plenty of drama at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Warning: Spoilers ahead! If you have not watched the latest episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, do not read any further.

During the premiere episode, Meredith Grey was brutally attacked by a patient, and had to spend the next couple months recovering in the hospital away from her children. Now, the show is turning its attention back towards April Kepner and Jackson Avery, the couple who has been trying to resolve the conflicts in their marriage.

Thursday’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy was spent recounting the events that lead up to April and Jackson’s demise. We saw everything from their first encounters as interns to them losing their baby boy Samuel to a rare, deadly disease.

Although the couple has continuously tried to work things out, their attempts have fallen short, and on Thursday we saw April finally sign the divorce papers, per Jackson’s request. However, despite agreeing to the divorce, April has one small secret — she may be pregnant! At the end of Thursday’s episode, April tells Arizona that she took a pregnancy test earlier in the day and it was positive. Now, Grey’s Anatomy fans are wondering if, and when, she will tell Jackson about the possible pregnancy.

Following the episode, TVGuide spoke to Sarah Drew, who plays April, about the shocking news, and what exactly this means for her character.

“I was completely shocked when I read that in the script,” Drew said of the pregnancy news. “I was like, oh my gosh. But I loved it. It was this beacon of hope that we could cling onto. So, I love it. I had no idea it was coming, and I’m so glad that it did.”

Last season, April tried every way possible to make her marriage to Jackson work. She refused to give up on their relationship, and would not agree to a divorce, which is why fans were shocked when she actually signed the papers during the latest episode. Drew explained to TV Guide why her character finally gave in and gave Jackson what he wanted, saying she realized he was officially done.

“I think [Jackson] not answering [her question] is his decision,” Drew said. “I think when she says, ‘Are you sure you want this?,’ that’s her extending herself. Please, is there any shot? He’s already signed this stuff. He’s done. They’re waiting for me to sign the papers. I look at him and I’m hanging on to one last glimmer of hope, and then he looks at me and then looks away. That’s like the final nail in the coffin.”

At the end of the episode, April declines a drink from Arizona and tells her she may be pregnant. Although she said she took the test earlier that day, it isn’t clear if she knew she was pregnant before or after signing the papers.

“The timeline is not completely clear, but we will find out in the next few episodes whether she knew before or after the meeting,” Drew said. “What we do know is she took a test on the day that she signed the papers, but we don’t know if she took the test before or after she signed the papers. But you will find out in the next couple of episodes.”

Although Sarah Drew didn’t say when April would be sharing the news with Jackson, she did say viewers would be finding out more about the situation in the next few episodes.
