Last week, on American Idol, viewers enjoyed getting to see Kelly Clarkson on the show. Kelly performed her new song “Piece by Piece” and it was a very emotional performance. Of course, this made fans curious who Kelly Clarkson wrote this emotional song about and Bustle shared the details. This may be the last time anyone will ever see Kelly Clarkson on the American Idol stage. Kelly won’t be able to fly for much longer due to her pregnancy and this is the last season of the show.
This song obviously made Kelly Clarkson emotional, but she blamed her emotional reaction on the pregnancy; but, Clarkson could have also been emotional over the story behind this song. It’s all about a little girl that was abandoned by her father. Kelly Clarkson shared that her mindset was about her husband, Brandon Blackstock, and the way that he is with their daughter, River. Kelly said that they are partners in raising her in an interview with Glamour.
Kelly Clarkson has shared that Brandon Blackstock is the exact opposite of her own father because he is around. Kelly’s dad wasn’t around when she was growing up and Brandon is very involved with their daughter. Clarkson shared some of the details about her dad and how he wasn’t around for her.
“It’s a positive song, even though I know it sounds sad. I don’t know what my father went through as a child, and I don’t know why he left and made the decisions he made, but everyone’s human. I don’t understand it for me, but I understand the depth of what that is—having a child—now, and he’s made me want to be that much more present in my family.”
Kelly Clarkson is now pregnant with her second child with husband Brandon Blackstock. They have a daughter and now Kelly and Brandon have a son on the way. She says she feels very lucky to have a man who is standing by her side.

Keith Urban also broke down in tears while Kelly Clarkson was singing the song. Hollywood Life shared the reason that Keith got so emotional over this song. A close source explained what had Keith so upset during the song.
“Keith was touched by Kelly’s raw emotions during her performance but it was really his own emotions that had him feeling overwhelmed. Her song was all about her father and the father of her children which struck a chord with him. Unlike Kelly, Keith grew up having a great relationship with his father Bob. Unfortunately he died in December and Keith is still heartbroken over it. Hearing Kelly sing about what a great father her husband is got to him.”
Keith Urban is the father of two young daughters himself. He has been through a rough time this last year. This had to make him start thinking about his girls as well while hearing this touching song Piece by Piece. Kelly had trouble making it to the end of the song and Keith was in tears while she was singing it. It was hard watching Keith cry, but the emotions on this show had people at home in tears as well.
