As the Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots continue to soar, more people are interested in playing the popular lottery games for the first time. There are several things to keep in mind when playing the lottery. First, lottery games are a form of gambling, therefore, players can become addicted just as they do with any other form of gambling. Powerball and Mega Millions games should always be played in a fun and responsible manner. As the jackpots grow, more people become vulnerable to the fantasy of becoming rich and may do risky things in order to increase their odds of striking it rich. Some people pool large amounts of money and buy tons of tickets hoping to win. This is not an advisable strategy. Playing games like Powerball and Mega Millions should be fun, and you should never see a negative financial impact from playing. Tickets for Powerball cost $2 and Mega Millions tickets are $1. You can add a Power Play multiplier or Mega Millions megaplier for an additional $1. Never borrow money to play the lottery, and never use bill money to buy lottery tickets. If you are going to play the lottery on a regular basis, as many people do, create an entertainment fund and use money from that fund to play.
Next, realize that not everyone is able to play Powerball and Mega Millions in their state. Both games are operated by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), and there are certain states that don’t have the lottery games available to play. If you are going to play Powerball and Mega Millions, begin by visiting your state lottery website and determining exactly how the game is played, what hours you can buy tickets, when the drawings are held, and what steps are in place should you win a large prize. Most states operate the same way, but California is a pari-mutuel state, and their jackpot amounts will vary slightly from other states. You can find a list of state lotteries and U.S. territories that play Powerball on the official site. You can find states and territories that play Mega Millions at the official site as well. Contacting your governing state lottery will provide you with many resources to ensure your game is played in a safe and fun manner.
The MUSL applied several recent changes to how Powerball is played. It was first reported that the original changes were going to allow for more people to win the Powerball jackpot by increasing the odds. It was later determined, however, that it would be in the best interest of the game to make the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot more difficult. This increased the odds of winning non-jackpot prizes, and as it makes the Powerball jackpot more difficult to win, jackpots continue to roll and will get larger.
Powerball officials approved, then abandoned changes that would have given ticket buyers better odds: https://t.co/iYgcsXvppi
