Secret Ex-Wife Of Idris Elba Recalls Heartbreak After Their Four-Month Marriage

Forty-three-year-old Idris Elba took home the win for Best Supporting Male at the 2016 Film Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, California, on February 27. Beasts of No Nation scored five nominations, and earned two trophies for Idris and young star Abraham Attah. Elba brought Attah on stage during his acceptance speech (see clip below). The win is considered a consolation, since The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences snubbed him for his role as a commandant of an African army of child soldiers. He won the Screen Actors Guild award for the part on January 30.

While Elba’s professional life is center stage at the moment, a surprising secret from his past is hoping to share the spotlight. It was previously reported that Idris is a single man again after splitting from his baby momma Naiyana Garth. He was also married to a woman named Hanne “Kim” Norgaard from 1999-2003, and they share a daughter, Isan. Now, his secret ex-wife of only four months is spilling the tea, and both she and her mother are recalling the blues that Elba left her singing.

According to a lawyer named Sonya Hamlin, she and Elba were married very briefly back in 2006, and she says he left her with a broken heart after he chose his career over love. Elba and Hamlin had been living together in Maryland for a few weeks after he wrapped filming on The Wire. A source tells UK’s The Sun about the wild night they tied the knot in Vegas.

“I remember Idris. They were both very nice, not intoxicated or nothing crazy like that. They arrived at 5-6pm,” a source at the chapel says. “I recognised him because my brother’s a fan of The Wire. They were having a lot of fun. The person checking them in was joking about them marrying in Vegas and Idris was giving it back.”

Wedded bliss lasted only two months before Hamlin filed for divorce. The Sun reports how the split was triggered by constant fighting over where they should live, when they should have kids, and at the center of the turmoil – Idris wanted to move to L.A. to take his acting career to the next level.

“One of the reasons it ended was her practice was doing well here but Idris wanted to be in LA,” another source adds. “At some point he had a choice between being a husband or a heartbreaker. He chose his career over her.”

Sonya’s mother, Betty Hamlin, recalls her daughter’s heartbreak after Idris walked out. “It was a very painful relationship.” Another friend adds, “It’s a heartbreak story. She cared about him and when they broke up it tore her up.”

However, a 2012 tweet from Sonya makes it seem like the former couple are cooler than the other side of a pillow.

Elba’s love life remains just as curious and mysterious as the man himself. He and Garth began dating in the summer of 2013, and they welcomed his son Winston in April 2014. His rumored hookups are with singer K. Michelle and supermodel Naomi Campbell. K. Michelle has tweeted and written music about her alleged painful breakup with the actor, so much so that the Luther star blocked her from Instagram back in 2014.

Idris Elba is currently in negotiations to take the male lead in an adaptation of Charles Martin’s best-selling novel The Mountains Between Us, TheWrap reports. He next stars in Star Trek Beyond, and dark-fantasy fans are looking forward to his take as gunslinger Roland in an adaptation of Stephen King’s beloved The Dark Tower. Elba also lends his voice to Disney’s live-action The Jungle Book and the animated sequel Finding Dory.
