Weight Loss, No Matter How Small, Helps Dieters Reap Huge Benefits And Lowers Diabetes Risk
Weight loss is never an easy process, and for those who are severely obese, it brings many health risks, including an increased risk for diabetes. For those who are severely obese, a weight loss of as little as 5 percent can lead to huge health benefits.
The New York Times reported that a weight loss of 5 percent can actually improve metabolic function and reduce the risk of type two diabetes. Current treatment guidelines have often recommended losing 5 to 10 percent of body weight to improve health and reduce the risk of chronic disease. These previous studies didn’t distinguish between a weight loss of 5 percent and those who lost significantly more.
One of the most recent studies, a clinical trial, randomized 40 obese individuals who were experiencing insulin resistance with a choice of either maintaining their body weight or going on a reduced calorie diet. They were allowed to lose 5, 10 or 15 percent of their body weight. For those who lost only 5 percent, they saw their insulin sensitivity increase significantly as well as triglyceride concentrations, blood pressure, and heart rate. The markers for inflammation didn’t improve.
Dr. Samuel Klein, a professor at Washington University School of Medicine and senior author of the study that was published in the journal Cell Metabolism, said that they needed to understand the differences in the percentage of weight loss.
“Losing 5 percent is much easier than losing 10 percent, so it was important to understand what the differences might be. You get a big bang for your buck with 5 percent.”

These tools have the calorie counting built in and make it easier to track calories consumed. It will also help with tracking your calories even when you sleep.
