Philadelphia Eagles Rumors: Robert Griffin III Could Be Team’s Starting Quarterback In 2016

The Philadelphia Eagles are rumored to be among the favorites to land Robert Griffin III, who is now officially becoming a free agent.

Though it was widely assumed that the Washington Redskins would part ways with Griffin this offseason, it wasn’t official until this week when team president Bruce Allen made it clear that RGIII’s future was not in Washington.

“Well, no. I see Robert getting an opportunity with another team,” Allen said in a radio interview (via SportsXChange). “We’ve heard from some teams that are interested. I think he’s going to have a choice of a couple teams that will let him excel in the future.”

Griffin is expected to have several suitors this off-season, and rumors indicate that the Philadelphia Eagles may be the most motivated to land him. The Eagles suffered through shaky quarterback performances from Nick Foles, and could be a good fit for a team that could be playoff-bound with even steady play from the position.

NJ.com noted that the Griffin-to-Eagles rumor seems to make the most sense.

“Griffin and the Eagles seem to make sense on paper, as both can offer the other what they have been looking for the past two seasons.

“For the Eagles, Griffin gives the team a low-risk, high-reward option at a position they have been trying to fill since Donovan McNabb left in 2009. Although multiple teams being interested might raise the price to sign him, there is no question that Griffin will be a cheaper option than Sam Bradford, who is expected to be the top free agent quarterback available.”

The Dallas Cowboys had been considered a front-runner to land Robert Griffin III, but sources close to the team now say that Griffin is not seen as a good fit. While the Cowboys need to find an eventual replacement for Tony Romo, it appears that Griffin is not it.

“Not a lot of people in Dallas think he’s a great fit in Jason Garrett’s offense, and I’m told that Scott Linehan, the offensive coordinator, is really not a fan of RG3’s and doesn’t think he would excel with what the Cowboys would ask him to do,” said ESPN’s Ed Werder (via PFT).

Other local Dallas sportswriters say the team doesn’t see Robert Griffin as a good fit, with some saying even Johnny Manziel would be better equipped to run the team’s offense. While that doesn’t exactly mean the Cowboys will be giving Manziel a second chance in the NFL, it does mean one more team out of the running for Robert Griffin III.

If the rumors are true and the Philadelphia Eagles are angling for Robert Griffin III, they may find that the price is very low. Griffin is 5-15 in his past 20 NFL starts and lost the explosiveness that made him such a dynamic passer his rookie season. NJ.com noted that Sam Bradford is likely to have much more competition for his services.

Those close to Griffin said he devoted last season to improving the flaws in his game and is ready to come out stronger than before. Teammate Niles Paul, who also missed the last season after fracturing his ankle, said RGIII is poised to become one of the league’s best quarterbacks again.

“Robert hasn’t missed a beat,” Paul told 106.7 the Fan, a CBS Sports Radio station. “I’m confident, wherever he goes, he’ll play and I expect him to do big things, because that’s just the type of person he is, the competitor he is. I know Rob is not down and out, he’s just that type of guy and I love him to death. I know that, if it’s not here, wherever he goes he’ll ball out. I guarantee that.”

If the rumors pan out, then the Philadelphia Eagles may have the steal of the 2016 offseason.
