??Vanessa Hudgens Joins ??The NBC?? DC Comics Pilot ‘Powerless’

Actress Vanessa Hudgens? has just been confirmed to appear in an NBC comedy pilot titled Powerless. In a world with a growing number of superhero television shows, this pilot is another series aimed towards the comic book/superhero crowd, and the most interesting bit of info is that it will be taking place in the world of DC Comics.

Via Entertainment Weekly, Powerless can be described as taking place in “one of the worst insurance companies in America — with the twist being that it also takes place in the universe of DC Comics. The show is about the reality of working life for a normal, powerless person in a world of superheroes and villains.”

Vanessa Hudgens will be playing the role of Emily Locke, who will be living in a world with Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Blue Beetle and all of the superheroes within the DC Universe. Will we be seeing any of those big name heroes making an appearance in the show? Probably not, for the heavyweights like Batman and Superman, but for the lesser-known heroes/villains like Blue Beetle and Zatanna, maybe. This show won’t be in the same universe as the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) that includes Man of Steel and Batman v Superman. If anything, their names will probably be mentioned, while the show puts its main focus on the non-superpowered characters, like Hudgens’ Emily Locke. This frees the producers and writers from having to stick with continuity and specific story plot-points, which is necessary, when there are other TV shows that connect to another show or movie universe, i.e. The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Locke is described as an “insurance claims adjuster who loves her job because she gets to help people. Emily likes to fly under the radar and just get her work done. She finds herself increasingly exasperated by the disruptive antics of the various superheroes that proliferate in her city.” Vanessa Hudgens seems like a bit of an odd choice for a project like this, but perhaps NBC is looking to bring in name actors to help build the credibility of this show, since they are the only network that does not have a superhero series. Their latest superhero effort, Heroes Reborn, was considered a failure and thus cancelled.

??Vanessa Hudgens’s performance in Grease: Live was her last television appearance, and the actress performed just after her father, Greg Hudgens, died the previous day. Vanessa took to Twitter to let her followers know that that despite the terrible news, she would be doing the show in his memory. “It was incredibly hard for her,” one source reportedly told Us Weekly, “but she’s a true entertainer, so it was on with the show.”

It was a performance that brought Vanessa Hudgens a huge amount of acclaim, noting her confidence and bravery. The High School Musical star’s film career has not been stellar within the last few years. She’s had roles in a couple of low-budget/independent films like Gimmie Shelter and Freaks of Nature. Hudgens also appeared in Robert Rodriguez’s grindhouse-style flick Machete Kills, the sequel to Machete, though the film certainly wasn’t a blockbuster at the box office. Spring Breakers, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and Sucker Punch were all films that received horrible-to-mixed reviews, with Sucker Punch being the most poorly received.

Vanessa Hudgens starring in NBC’s Powerless may prove to be more successful than her film roles, and if that’s the case, TV might be a more comfortable medium for her. With any luck, this will be another hit for DC Comics on television.
