Cindy Crawford is not hiding behind a face full of makeup for her 50th birthday. The former supermodel celebrated turning the big 5-0 by posting a close-up—and makeup free— Instagram pic while on a tropical vacation for her birthday weekend with husband Rande Gerber.
While Crawford looks fabulous at 50, the model-turned-entrepreneur also shared a throwback snap from her 21st birthday from 29 years ago, which shows her blowing out candles on a massive cake that was decorated as a Vogue magazine cover. Cindy captioned the pic with the comment: “The cake says ‘What’s Next?’ — now I know!”
Cindy Crawford has long been one of the hardest working models in the business, but she recently teased that she plans to scale back a little bit. While it won’t be considered a full blown retirement, E! News shared that Cindy recently told United Airlines’ Rhapsody magazine that she’s ready to step away from modeling.
“I’m sure I’ll have my picture taken for 10 more years, but not as a model anymore. And that’s okay. I’ve done it. I’ve worked with all these incredible photographers. What else do I need to do? I can’t keep reinventing myself. I shouldn’t have to keep proving myself. I don’t want to.”
Crawford later clarified her statements via Instagram, reiterating that she’s not ready to make any final statements regarding her 30-year modeling career, and that she would never say “never” to future opportunities.
“Every year, I tell my kids I’m retiring. It’s a running joke in our family. And yet every year, opportunities pop up that really excite me. While it’s true that I’m eager to shift my focus a bit to concentrate on my businesses, friends and family — I’m not making any final statements (not all headlines tell the whole story!). I have loved being part of the fashion industry for the past 30 years — and if that time has taught me anything, it’s this: never say never.”
Crawford, who penned an autobiographical book, titled Becoming, last year, told Yahoo Beauty‘s Bobbi Brown that she faces the same insecurities that all women do when it comes to aging. But Cindy also revealed that she believes that age is just a number.
“I felt this way about 40 too; The buildup is way worse. Once the birthday has come and gone, you’re like, ‘I’m just the same.’ I feel like, our society, and especially being a model, we put such significance on those numbers… but there’s also so much to celebrate about the journey that you’ve taken, and we’re so fortunate to be here, with our health.”
As for how Cindy Crawford keeps herself healthy and in shape at age 50, it’s no surprise that the mom of two watches what she eats and exercises. (Sorry if you were looking for a magic pill!) Crawford told Brown she downs salads and smoothies, and usually skips the bread basket.
“We all know the things to do. It’s no secret. If you eat protein and vegetables, that’s probably going to help you not gain weight. I rarely eat bread. I mean I really don’t. Usually I’ll make myself some kind of green crazy smoothie in the morning, and then for lunch, I usually have like a salad with protein.”
When it comes to her fitness routine, Crawford opts for a 20-minute treadmill trek, then uses free weights and does lunges and ab work. On the weekends, Cindy heads outside for a hike or a bike ride. It all adds up to a fabulous 50.
