Maksim Chmerkovskiy And Peta Murgatroyd Throw Star-Studded Engagement Party In NYC
Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd were joined by family and famous friends for a star-studded engagement party in New York City over the weekend. The Dancing With the Stars duo hosted a masquerade-themed engagement celebration at the Diamond Horseshoe, a club in the basement of New York City’s Paramount Hotel near Times Square.
Guests at Maskim and Peta’s party included DWTS alums Rumer Willis and Amy Purdy, as well as Chmerkovskiy’s brother Val and several other pro dancer pals, including Sharna Burgess. Peta dressed in a white tuxedo-style top and half-skirt with a floral lace underlay, while Maksim wore an all black suit for the bash.
While Chmerkovskiy and his bride-to-be were the stars of the party, guest Rumer Willis stole the spotlight for a few minutes. According to E! News, Willis ended the night with a solo performance of Whitney Houston’s hit song “I Will Always Love you.”
Maksim Chmerkovskiy, 36, and Peta Murgatroyd, 29, got engaged in front of an audience full of fans in December while performing SWAY: A Dance Trilogy in Miami. At the time, Maksim told ET Online that he kept his engagement plan secret from everyone—even his brother Val, who’s also a DWTS dancer.
“I have a big circle of people that I’ve accumulated over the years that are now her friends and her family, and if you say just the closest few, [that would be] like 50 people, so I decided not to say anything to anybody. No mom, no dad. I also wanted it to be kind of like a surprise for everybody. Everybody had an amazing moment that was very unforgettable. And things like this need to be unforgettable. It needs to be special. But I told her I’m not planning anything else! I’m done.”
The pro dancers and fellow mirrorball champs have been dating on and off for four years. While they had a nasty split in 2013, last year Maksim told Glamour that his relationship with his DWTS co-star feels different the second time around.
“We’re cool. I think that to briefly answer your question, we’re just older. I guess things happen differently when you’re older and time’s passed and things have happened. I am a very intelligent guy, contrary to what it might seem. I feel different now because we’re different.”
After Maksim proposed to Murgatroyd in December, several DWTS pro dancers and former contestants publicly congratulated them. One person who has remained strangely silent on the engagement is Chmerkovskiy’s fellow DWTS champ and former fiancé, Karina Smirnoff. Karina clearly did not attend Maks Chmerkovskiy’s engagement party, although the exes seemingly buried the hatchet over the years and have even performed together on DWTS and other dancing shows after their split. It will be interesting to see if Smirnoff is invited to Maks’ wedding.
And although they have not set a wedding date yet, based on Maks Chmerkovskiy’s comments, it sounds like Peta will be doing most of the wedding planning. In an interview with People last month, the bride-to-be teased that her wedding to Maksim could come sometime in 2017.
“We know that we want to do an East Coast wedding. That’s about it. Probably in a year or something but that’s really all we’ve thought about.”
No matter when the wedding date is, this engagement party was a great start to Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd’s life together. Expect plenty of great dancing and singing when this DWTS wedding does take place.
