‘Deadpool’ Is The Highest Grossing ‘X-Men’ Movie After Only Ten Days

Deadpool has come out of the gates blazing, with opening weekend grossing a total of $130 million worldwide it was clear that this movie was one to keep your eyes on. Deadpool has topped the box office again this weekend with $55 million and this has lead to smashing the record for the X-Men franchise.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Deadpool‘s ten-day gross has placed the movie above all of it’s other X-Men counterparts in North America. Even more impressive, after just ten days Deadpool is the second highest grossing X-Men movie world-wide. To be clear, this is not a day ten to day ten comparison, this is a day ten to box office lifetime comparison.

Deadpool‘s continued success is no surprise after the record breaking opening weekend that the movie experienced. Deadpool trashed the record to becoming the highest grossing R-Rated movie ever. Here is a list of all the records Deadpool destroyed with its $130 million opening weekend.

  • Largest February Opening Weekend: $85.1 million; Fifty Shades of Grey
  • Largest 4-Day President’s Day Weekend: $93 million; Fifty Shades of Grey
  • Largest R-Rated Opening Weekend: $91.7 million; The Matrix Reloaded
  • Largest R-Rated Comic Adaptation Opening: $70.8 million; 300
  • Largest Winter Opening Weekend: $89.2 million; American Sniper
  • Largest Opening for 20th Century Fox: $108.4 million; Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

The new records created by Deadpool is such a big leap from the previous record holders that maybe only Deadpool 2 will be able to break them. The anti-hero of the X-Men have gone above and beyond the superheros. Deadpool’s domestic gross currently stands at $235 million. The highest grossing X-Men movie before Deadpool was X-Men: The Last Stand, which made upwards $234 million, and X-Men: Days of Future Past made $233 million domestically. Both films had a great haul for their gross internationally, in fact Days of Future Past out earned The Last Stand internationally.

X-Men: The Last Stand’s received a total of $459 million gross globally haul, X-Men:Days of Future Past had a stunning $747 million global haul. After ten days Deadpool now sits on a global gross of $491 million, taking the second place spot from X-Men:The Last Stand. Deadpool has quiet a long way to go to reach the record set by X-Men:Days of Future Past but at this rate it, Deadpool, may still be in the running to shatter that record, as well.

There is doubt that Deadpool will reach the top grossed, as it has already experienced a 60 percent earnings drop between opening weekend and their second weekend at the box office. Deadpool being an R-Rated movie does mean it is at a disadvantage to create the same level of gross. However, Deadpool, though having high expectations, has surpassed them and may just pull one more smashing surprise.

Comicbook.com states that the $55 million made in Deadpool‘s second weekend at the box office would be enough to cover the production cost of Deadpool and would still place the film in the top ten of the most successful February film releases. Deadpool‘s success can linked to the great marketing efforts.

Deadpool and his anti-hero ways have captured the hearts of many adults, leaving the superheroes scratching their heads. 2016 has a lot of superhero movies in the works, one being X-Men: Apocalypse. Deadpool has set the bar pretty high and in time it will be clear if this is the year of the anti-hero or if the the superheros will take back their top spot in comic book movies.
