Neighbors Paint Mixed Picture Of ‘Dark Knight Shooting’ Suspect James Holmes

Details are still emerging concerning the facts and background of James Holmes, the 24-year old who stands accused of killing 13 people and injuring 38 more in a late-night shooting in Aurora, Colo.

What is becoming known, is that his neighbors from his native San Diego, Calif., and neighbors from his current residence in Colorado have vastly differing views on just who he was.

The Los Angeles Times spoke with Tom Mai, a retired electrical engineer, who claimed that Holmes and his family were involved with the local Presbyterian Church.

“He seemed to be a normal kid, I don’t know what triggered it. This makes me very sad,”Mai told the Times.

But neighbors who shared a small apartment complex with Holmes prior to his arrest had dissenting views on his character.

The Huffington Post reports that neighbor Zhang Yi, a 34-year-old visiting scholar of interventional neuroradiology at the University of Colorado Hospital, saw Holmes on Friday.

“I said, ‘Hey,’ and he doesn’t answer me,” Yi told the Huffington Post. “Not friendly.”

Michelle Thuis, another neighbor, told Hollyscoop.com that Holmes was rarely seen.

“He lives just two floors above me, there are only 12 units in the complex,” she said. “Nobody really noticed anything or saw anything strange…I never saw him.”

Holmes’ own family released a statement.

“Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and family and friends to those involved,” they wrote. “We are still trying to process this information and we hope people will respect our privacy.”
