Sia And James Corden Have Epic Carpool Karaoke On ‘The Late Late Show’

Singer Sia, who keeps her face disguised throughout all of her public appearances, decided to join James Corden for an epic carpool karaoke experience on The Late Late Show. The carpool karaoke segment isn’t new, and has resulted in priceless moments made popular by some guests going viral. The most recent guest to go viral was Adele, who rapped to Nicki Minaj’s verse in Kanye West’s song, “Monster.”

The latest segment to go viral is the aforementioned Sia, who dons a wig covering half of her face. Don’t worry, the elusive singer isn’t in the driver’s seat for the segment! The two didn’t just sing on the 10-minute car trip, they covered a myriad of topics, including an addiction to aliens.

James Corden, who also wore a wig in a bob cut for the event, asked Sia what everyone wanted to know. Why does she wear the wig? Her answer might surprise people who thought it was just a gimmick. The singer-songwriter actually has a logical reason for why she chooses to hide her face during all of her public appearances.

“I don’t wear this thing unless there’s a camera around, I only wear it so I can maintain a modicum of privacy. I was an alcoholic and a drug addict. I sobered up, and I decided I didn’t want to be an artist anymore, because I was starting to get a little bit famous and it was destabilizing in some way.”

She continued to explain to Corden and audiences watching at home.

“So I thought, ‘What doesn’t exist in pop music at the moment?’ And it was mystery. I was like, there’s pictures on Instagram of everyone at the dentist.”

The topic only stayed heavy for a few seconds because throughout the segment Sia and Corden sung “Diamonds” and the singer’s songs “Elastic Heart,” “Alive,” and “Chandelier.” As many may not know, Sia wrote the song “Diamonds,” which is a song that singer Rihanna made popular years ago.

Producer Benny Blanco in an interview with the Huffington Post, explained the “Diamonds” session with Sia, and how they created the song in fourteen minutes. Although it’s really hard to picture anyone else singing the song, the hit song wasn’t originally intended for Rihanna at all.

“We’re sitting there trying to make records, and we finally just said, ‘Let’s just do something we like.’ Let’s make a hip-hop record with some really cool chords on it.”

He continued: “It didn’t sound Rihanna at all. We were more thinking of making a record that sounds like Kanye. Let’s make a record with a dope beat. So we did. Then Sia heard the track and instantly gravitated towards it. We weren’t even thinking of putting a pop song on it, but she wrote this amazing song.”

Sia had recorded a version of the song, and vocally the two songs are nearly identical. Of the sound, Sia said that Rihanna just liked the way it was originally, even though she has no doubt that Rihanna could’ve come up with something different.

Rihanna isn’t the only artist Sia has written for. In the past, Sia has contributed and collaborated with Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, Flo Rida, and Lea Michele.
